I don't have Windows Media Player obviously, but according to Wikipedia, it can encode mp3s at up to 320 kbps, and WMA files at up to 192 kbps.

I suspect the whole antitrust thing may have had something to do with that change :)

It was limited to 56kbps in Windows 2000, and earlier versions of XP.

It wouldn't surprise me. I seem to recall that at the time, Microsoft were still pretending that a 64 kbps WMA file sounded the same as an 128 bps mp3.
  • The problems is with cd you are using. Few weeks ago I went into ASDA and bought their Cd brand and burned music files onto it.It played well on my laptop but wont play in the car. I had to go and get Sony Cdr and it worked perfectly everywhere.( I did it through itunes too)

Cheap media are often the cause of CD-burning problems.

    I recommend Verbatim myself.

It's not as simple as that unfortunately, even premium brands release cheapo CDs. Philips are the worst for that, they have more than one type of CDR and the cheap one is actually made in Taiwan by a company called Ritek who are notorious for making crappy CDRs

There's only actually 5 companies that make CDRs, Taiyo Yuden are the one to go for.

You can check the media ID so you know what you're getting (or what you've got more accurately):
