Have a look in your local papers ( in the local library of course) for any "Unplugged" nights or "Open Mic" nights in pubs in your area. You will be amazed at the undiscovered talent around and will have a brilliant night out with no entrance fee other than the price of a drink. Trust me, you will often hear better singers and musicians for free, than ones you have paid to see.....
  • We've started having board game evenings with a couple of friends- little prizes for the evenings overall winners to make it a bit more interesting and someone has mentioned forefits for the losers next time!!

We also have a local pub that does a pub quiz every sunday, great nights entertainment for £1 per peson and the cost of a drink or two if you want. Ours is total bargain as the landlady brings around a platter of sandwiches for each person at the break so our £1 each also buys us a snack dinner :j Also (again at a pub but thats just coincidence!!) see if any pubs are doing any live music? I went to a local pub on thursday to see Jim Fox- awesome incidently- and most pubs don't charge entry for their music evenings so only cost was a couple of diet cokes
Very excited to be marrying my partner in crime for the last 7 years in September 2012 :j

  • sorry just seen beedeedee's post saying the same thing about live music in pubs! Ah well, at least I've seconded it by mentioning it again! :o

  • Making tapestry cushions are my current evening entertainment. I've had several kits in the past, so am now using up all the left over wool making a cushion of my own design which is going to be a Christmas present for someone next year. Unprinted canvas is really cheap to buy, an oblong tapestry frame make it easier to work, in my opinion and the wools I'm using are leftovers. I'm just sewing little hexagons, so it will look like a patchwork quilt when it's finished
  • As I live alone I have to be creative about my entertainment . I usually save Catch-up t.v. for Saturday nights as its normally rubbish on ordinary t.v.
I do like knitting, so I have radio 4 on my wireless and enjoy the plays in the afternoon. I do enjoy Sunday afternoons with my grandchildren as we try to play one of their board games that they had as Christmas presents. I love reading so that helps .Local theatre isn't too expensive and am-dram is sometimes very good, even at times hilarious when things go wrong unintentionally .
I can't walk too far, but have gone with my DD to our local country park with the youngest grandson and he runs everywhere and is always in need of a push on the swings .We take our own small lunch and drinks so it doesn't cost very much.
There are lots of things available its just a case of finding them Librarys are good not only for books but video's and dvds and sometimes you can find a jigsaw or two. My local libray does jigsaws and are very cheap to rent .
I make my own craft cards so I can always find something to make there.
I used to love quiz nights but now I'm widowed I sadly don't do them anymore.
Look at your local council site and see what entertainmaent they have on offer . As I'm over sixty I can now swim for free at my local baths. In my case I am doing a part-time Uni course at the moment so its not a case of finding something to do ,but finding the time to do all the things available.
  • OH and me had a rare trip out to the cinema on Tuesday night and were horrified to find that it was £7 each for our tickets and £5 for some pick and mix (we didn't get that much, honestly :o)

Other than the tv/dvd's what sort of things can you think of for fun on a budget...especially for the many many nights when we're stuck in (we have a toddler)
    • Take up a hobby or craft
    • Write letters
    • Spend time with your toddler
    • Read books
    • Learn a language
Do remember to enjoy this time - once your child is a teenager, you'll be permanent taxi, and will long for quiet nights in :o

Thanks for adding it to this thread Penny....so many great ideas! :T
  • Blockbuster will take Nectar points (500 I think) to "pay" for a rental.

Rentals from libraries are even cheaper, but they don't have the most up to date DVDs.

Get to know and be friendly to your local librarians they will tell you when they are about to order new titles in. Then all you have to do is keep looking for them on the shelf. That's half the fun
  • A couple of ideas for things to do with kids, making pompoms with strips of fabric instead of wool & using the wool to make god's eyes with 2 lolly sticks, or french knitting if ordinary knitting is too complicated.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
