  • Have you tried using different smells on a kind of 'rotation'? Sometimes if you're always using the same kind of scents you stop being able to smell it - your house probably smells lovely to someone who walks in but you just don't notice it anymore! Another idea is to have different smells in different rooms, that way when you walk around the house you're always coming across a fresh scent.

I've got pot pourri dotted about and OH buys me a bunch of lilies every week........they give off a lovely smell.
We've got three cats............don't know if we've got a 'cat smelly house' - living with them I wouldn't notice anyway..............lol
Scented candles could do the trick...........but really thats an evening thing I think.

    Hi there

My hubby gets a reaction to just about every "smelly" apart from Yankee candles :p .... and the other thing i can get away with is tucking tumble dryer sheets down the back of the radiators :T ..you get a lovely smell when the heating kicks in -but its not over powering like some air fresheners.
They only last a couple of weeks or so but they are so cheap to buy its not a problem...hope it helps

Please be careful with lillies if you've got cats, apparently they can be toxic.

I have an aromastone - plugs in and warms up and use essential oils in it which warm it all the time and smells wonderful - I mix orange, cinnamon and cloves for a lovely winter smell and I have 2 cats which would not able me to have candles as they would be into everything - they leave this alone

Gingernutmeg................yes I know about lilies.......it's not so much the plant but if the cats got too close and sniffed the stamens (is that the right word for the pollen bits?) they'd get the brown powdery stuff on them and then the problem is when they wash themselves.
Our cats never go near the lilies -almost like they know.

We always cut the pollen out of lillies that we have at home,
the first reason is that it's toxic,
the second is that they seem to last longer that way,
the third is that lilly pollen can stain fabric permanently if any of it drops onto carpet/sofa/curtains/clothes!
:D**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

  • GInger you beat me to it. If you keep refreshing the essential oil or rewetting on the radiator it is fine. Lamp rings are good .
