  • Maybe you could get a few offcuts of guttering from a friendly builder for fat legs - for the pig!!

Well whatever you use them for they are a great savings tool, unfortunately in todays society the best savings rates are either direct online or have minimum deposit values.
Teaching our children the value of money and what to do with it are valuable skills that I dont think the internet can assist in. Piggy Banks however, are a great inspiration.
We recently opened a savings account for our daughter not based on the rate but on the means by which she could save. (Our daughter is 17 months old)
The driving factors where, ease of access to put money in, what she saved her money in, and lastly how much interest she would get.
She now has a pricipality account, which when we opened gave her a 'Dylan the Dragon' piggy bank to put her pennies into.
Every day and at least 3 to 4 times a day, Erin asks for pennies to put into Dylan, he comes down off the fireplace and she delicately fills his belly until they are all gone. She then pats him on the head and says in her own way 'Good Boy' and points for him to be returned to the shelf for safe keeping.
Dylan had a trip last week where Erin emptied him for the cashier of Principality to count, he naturally afterwards was quite hungry and has been fed more frequently since.
How early can you learn the value of money, I am not sure but when offered a pocket full of change my daughter takes pennies in this order Gold, Silver Bronze. A money saver in the making.
However and for whatever you use a piggy bank, it is important that it has an identity and a prominant place, that way you wont forget why you have it.:D
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.

After reading this thread I got myself a pig, well shes actually a cow, but shes very cute, havent decided what to call her yet but shes got three really tiny annoying screws in the bottom so you know its going to a complete hassle getting the money out and believe me this can only be a good thing :rotfl:
Unfortunately she's not for my mortgage as ive got a mountain of debt to tackle first but she's going to start working on that straight away :T

  • My piggy is for us all to save for a power shower which we would really like. So far we have saved £195. I have no idea what we need for a power shower but I reckon it must be quite a bit, so we will keep going. He gets best fed on washdays as I normally find money in pockets.
  • When you decide on a shower you want make sure you use kelkoo or something for a price comparison, especially if you belong to one of the paid to clicks things going!
  • Well got over £600 now think that will be it for the month, not been very well latley - I think I had a virus, so I haven't managed to match this months mortgage payment, but then last month was good so I won't cry too hard! Just wanted to say hi  and thanks to your inspiration I do believe there's a pigsback piggy winging its way here, and will soon be embarking on a mortgage-busting mission too

Looking forward to more of your updates and thanks again for sharing the brilliant idea :T :T :T

  • I am still new at this but I wanted to say thank you for being so inspirational. After reading all the pig messages (and having a good giggle too, at times) I started "Cuthbert Cube". My OH saved this chutney jar ages ago to have a go at glass painting but Cuthbert sat on the window ledge for ages gathering dust. I decided to up our mortgage payments by another £20 a month and try to save that amount in Cuthbert. I only started 2½ weeks ago and already we have amassed £21 to my OH's amazement (he was sceptical about my scheme but I handle the money in our household so he said I should just get on with it if it made me happy!). We are trying to be mortgage free by the middle of 2008 (I was inspired by the BBC 2 programme earlier this year) - it's hard going at times but I know it'll be worth it!
