We had a half hour conversation tonight with Jasmines homework as she could not understand how Would was different to Wood !!!!!!!!

How do you tell a child that at 6 years of age, ummm English is strange, they just sound the same OK Deal with it !!!:rotfl:
see that is easy, I would phone Grandma and get her to explain it coz that is what her day job is to do :D

You teach Wood as an 'oo' word, and as you teach it draw a picture next to it so when she writes it she associates it with trees. Would is a 'tricky' word therefore one that you teach her just to remember with spelling tests, like and, was, when, went, they.

She is fine witht he pronounciation (sp?) of them, just why 2 different words are the same. She is the sort of child that like to question things, does not like being told thats just the way it is !!
Same with things like flour and flower etc...
Think I may have to teach her to talk proper like cuz I dont and that probably confuses her even more !!!

I really wish I could do that, but am leaking a bit too much at the minute (sorry TMI)
My bum is sweating tonight

mleh, I'll just slime the skirt, I don't care. Fully chav tonight :p

Skinty, it looks so neat!!! And looks bigger in the blue top ;) Although I'd still say you look more like 24/25 weeks, but then we can't see how far inside your bump is :D

(also very jealous as you will just pop back into shape)

aww a little genius!! Do they still test reading age at school?
I remember being smug that I had a reading age of 15 (I think 16 is as high as it goes) when I was 8/9 sounds like she is similar :T

Yes they do test but reading age isn't a great indication of how well they wil do in literacy for instance. We had kids in our class, one girl as an example was ahead in reading by a few years but was well under average at literacy. Lots of kids can parrot read but can they tell you about what they have read, what did it mean, how did the characters feel. Too many parents rush through the books trying to get their kid on the next level and forget that they should be taking the time to enjoy the books.

Oops, that turned into a rant, sorry! :o

MM tell her the real reason then; English is the product of lots of different languages blah blah...
I'm sure you could give her a nice answer from a bit of googling
