The amount of times I have been charged outside my allowance is probably twice in three years. The maximum cost has been about £4 above my regular monthly payments. The biggest worry for me is that someone will get to use my phone without my permission (stolen, lost and found or whatever) and will run up a £x00 debt that the operator will try and get me to pay for. I would much rather set up a £50 limit where my phone will stop making outgoing calls until I send characters from a PIN to an operator run shortcode.

Sure I could check my usage repeatedly, but it's kind of hard if you can't find your phone and I would appreciate the extra safety. But given the networks can fleece money out of their customers this way, do I think they will make it easy to do this?

Then you would report it lost to the network,so they can block the sim card or the more secure way would be is to have a pin code on the phone as this would stop anyone from running up a bill .:)

Virgin will set a £50 monthly minimum credit limit,
3 will allow you to set a £0 limit above your monthly allowance. If you are use all of your allowance you can call and add extra money to your account via credit/debit card.
