Scamming EMA!

I am really peed of with this.
I know many people in my class at college who are SCAMMING EMA
I get nothing, ziltch, sod all!
I work at M&S on the weekends (£80 - *£110 if doing overtime*), support my self by doing paper rounds (£40) and sell on eBay.
The way im going, it does look like I will earn above the tax limit for student and be taxed 10%.
What is really annoying me Is that people are SCAMMING THE EMA by saying they live with there Nan or relatives! and they are geting the FULL WHACK OF £30 a week plus bonuses of £100 and im geting nothing.
Why arent EMA checking up on people who are making false claims? I asked my parents to say I lived with my nan and they refussed!
The people who get EMA only go to college because of their money, they brag about how much they get each week and go clothes shopping during breaks. Everyone should get it or no one at all

My mom is at Uni at the moment (at 40yo) and my dad is a sole tradder.
They reckon there earnings are about under £30,000 - So i could still get £10 a week plus bonuses- which I would be delighted to get! - yet despite my dad having his own accountant, she wont get round to adding up his earnings from last year!! - so he has no proof of his income.0 -
I think you may find that when you have the figures, your entitlement (if any) will be backdated to when you started your course and were eligible. That's happened to one of my students.BusinessStudent wrote:My mom is at Uni at the moment (at 40yo) and my dad is a sole tradder.

Sometimes things do seem unfair but there has to be a cut off point, my eldest was entitled to full EMA last year, and because I got a tiny pay rise it put me over the threshold by £100, so this year he is only entitled to £20 per week, I gain £100 per year, he loses £370 per year.........................c'est la vie
but at least he doesn't have a go at me, ranting and raving all over the place about it!!! I realise that it is hard for you but your parents are showing you that they have standards and in turn you to will have their morals and standards. You are also getting a wealth of experience that no amount of money can buy, and in the end you will be a much better well rounded person who will be able to make your way in the world.
I had this issue with my youngest daughter and now she is grateful for the grounding she received. Stay with it you will be a better person for this experinceSuicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.0 -
Firstly good on you for working the weekends and getting extra money by paper rounds etc, you have the makings of a good business person . With regard to the others scamming the system , I would call the benefits line and shop them .
Dont be tempted to make false claims etc the truth ALWAYS comes out .0 -
when i was in sizth form i was on the pilot ema, before it was nationwide. it was only in my borough, barking and dagenham, so my partner who went to the same school, had less family income but lived in ilford got nothing while i got the full whack.

I would say grass them up too but make sure as hell they don't find out you did it!!! People get a little peeved when they find out you have, especially if they thought you were their friend!:rotfl:[FONT=georgia, bookman old style, palatino linotype, book antiqua, palatino, trebuchet ms, helvetica, garamond, sans-serif, arial, verdana, avante garde, century gothic, comic sans ms, times, times new roman, serif]A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it

OP, how do you know what these people say is true?? When my son was at college he received EMA and I had to provide proof I was in receipt of child benefit for him. Once CB stopped at 19 the EMA stopped even though he hadnt finished his course. He then had to claim ALG (adult learning grant) based on his own income. Is this an option for you?? Its approx the same amount of money as EMA and you wouldnt come into the higher income bracket so you should be eligible.
My daughter also received EMA but again I had to show not only proof of my income but also child benefit.
My son used to get really miffed that everyone at college seemed to be supported financially by their parents whereas he had to work (I'm a poor mature student!!!). Like others have said, you'll be more self sufficient and able to deal with the real world. Try and remember though that what people say is not always the whole truth but their version of it!!~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0 -
Just out of interest - what is the tax limit for students?
Does that amount include buying/selling on eBay?0
