    1 onion

roll pastry out make a rectangle then rather like a swiss roll use bacon and chopped onion as filling roll it up wrap it in oiled gease proof paper you need 2 layers of foil over that to make it water tight then boil it for about 1.5 hours

The suet roll thingy is nice if it is baked too, goes lovely and crispy on outside. (Bake 20-25 mins) For this I usually fry off the onions and bacon before rolling them in the pastry.

Bacon and onion roll, favourite Saturday lunch when I was a kid, though we called it dinner only posh people had lunch. My favourite cheapo is potato and leek bake. Very thinly slice some potato and a leek, the ammount depends on the number you are feeding. Layer the potato and leek in an microwaveable dish if you've got any bacon chop that up and add to the layers. Either cover with cheese sauce or some milk and a bit of grated cheese and microwave for about 17mins. Poke it with a fork to see if the potato is cooked. If you like you can brown the top under the grill. I expect onions would work just as well as leeks and be cheaper. Yummy!!

Our favourite on cheap night is tuna and chips gourmet style.

Make nice thick chunky HM chips
Use canned tuna in oil (50 p)

Must be served in bowls (to keep hot and create a puddle of vinegar in the bottom)
    Put chips in first
    Splash with vinegar
    Good grating of sea salt
    Then layer tuna over
Then repeat the salt and vinegar (or not . . depending on taste)
Blob of mayonaisse to finish off

    Delicious

Had cheesy mash pie tonight, mashed potato and mashed carrots (u get away with using less cheese then cos of the colour from the carrots LOL;)), put in an oven proof dish and sprinkle the top with grated cheese, season if you like. No matter how much I do of this i think my kids would eat twice the amount:) We had a tin of sweetcorn and a tin of spinach with it.
DS2 aged 4 proudly announced he would make apple brown betty for afters (we not posh enough to have dessert or pudding) which is like a crumble but made with broken buttered bread instead of crumble. He sneakily gobbled the bits he thought were 'not the right shape':) and it tasted delicious. 3 slices of bread, 2 apples, cheap as anything. I would say at a rough guess the whole lot cost about £1.50, the spuds were from a sack and the apples were 3lb for £1, the tinned veg from the pound shop 3 for £1 ('posh' brands)

  • where can I buy popping corn, and how much is it?
Most people overlook opportunity as it comes dressed in overalls, and looks like hard work.

Indian grocers are the cheapest place to get it, and it is very cheap, less than £1 a bag.

I know the co-op sell popping corn but I would imagine other supermarkets do as well.

Its with the special diet foods in the co-op for some reason.

Yep as far as I can remember, its been years since I had any. Its in a clear bag at the co-op and if you imagine pop corn shrunk down, thats what it looks like. Like little beads.
