For the Omni - Greenside car boot on Sundays in Edinburgh, just a comment about toilets.

There are ones at the back of the St james centre, but if too early, may not be open.

McDonalds on South St Andrews Street is usually open very early (go to the top of Leith Walk/Leith Street, turn right onto Princes Street, and it's the first right after that, i.e. same side as St James Centre). This is worth getting to know, because they open at 5am, and these days you need to get to this car boot by around 6am just to guarantee a good spot.

After 8am though, I recommend Lloyds (Wetherspoons pub) in the Omni centre. Very nice, cheap, takeaway coffees, and good quality loos. Plus they have full cooked breakfasts at ridiculously low prices..... If going with children though, it's a pub, so you can only let them sit in the eating section if you are ordering meals - they're strict about this.

If going to this pub, you can avoid going outside by not going up in the main lifts. There are some quite small lifts, going through the car boot (the second left aisle, half way down on the left hand side) in the direction of the Omni Centre from that main lift that open directly into the Omni centre.

Has anyone been to the new indoor carboot sale at Ingliston yet? On Saturdays, started in October?

I stupidly went to this one in December and it was freezing, wasn't busy either so decided wouldn't go back til maybe March but it has now been cancelled.

I have been to this. It's a bit mixed. A lot of traders, not so many carbooters. Not as good as Omni on Sundays (Greenside) or Chesser (Saturdays and Sundays , at the Corn Exchange on Chesser Road, next to the Asda) on a warm day.

My favourite Saturday car boot market is still the one at Kinross. It's indoors as well, but always has heaps of good things to buy and is okay for selling too. Free parking for customers and if you fancy early shopping, they start at 7am. Plus there is a cafe which sells quite good chips. If you are selling there, if you tell the cafe you are a trader they give you a discount. Well, they used to. I guess they still do that now?

Gosh I hate kinross bootsale- mostly traders and seems to be the same stuff every week and the same stalls in the same spots every week... and it's freezing in the sheds if you're selling. Different opinions I suppose.
Grocery challenge October: £228.28/£250.00 NSD 4 ( not completed)
    Grocery challenge November : £291.65/300.00 NSD 10
Grocery challenge December : £0/240.00 NSD

We were at Kinross' saturday car boot sale this weekend. Yes, I too noticed a high number of traders nowadays. I wonder if this is because the person who runs it no longer advertises in newspapers like the Edinburgh Evening News, so fewer genuine car booters know about it.

    Can anyone help me?

We have today got a load of wedding presents out that have been stashed for 18 years most of which are not to my taste which is why they have been stashed.

Mainly china stuff both functional and fancy, ornaments, occasional tables and a canteen of cutlery. Also a deep fat fryer never out of it's box except for the showing of presents!

We need some money but I'm not sure I'm up to the task of ebaying this amount of stuff.

So I wondered about car boot but it would need to be tomorrow - ! - and for ease of travel asda chesser. Can anyone give us advice as to how it all works?

I'd even pay a commission to anyone who'd like the task. . . if anyone else was doing it it wouldn't have to be tomorrow, it's just that once dancing starts back we won't have Saturday morning free to do such a thing and Sunday isn't an option I'm afraid.

    Thanks in advance,

    Helen

If you are selling at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange Chesser car boot sale, beware of two stout Scottish men who will approach you before you set up. They may direct you to your space or help you with your table and give the appearance of working there. The bald one will ask you for jewellery, ornaments, train sets, figurines, china, etc. The bespectacled one will ask you whether you have mobile phones, dvds, laptops, etc.
You will get better prices if you do not sell to them.

I wish I had read this warning earlier.

I was at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange car boot sale last Sunday. Before I had even got out of my car a hard faced woman asked me whether I had any jewellery. Stupidly I said I did. She then called over two bulky men who fitted the above description and were asking the same things. They went through my stuff and tried to bully me into selling cheaply e.g. the specky one grabbed a large number of dvds and offered me £2, hoping I wouldn't notice the boxed sets he had snuck in.When I refused, they tried to scare me by saying I wouldn't get the prices I was asking, etc. (which I did shortly after from other buyers without any problem).

After this experience, my advice to other novice sellers is if the dealers ask you for anything, just say no and bring the stuff out after they've moved away. It's far less hassle and more profitable. :D
  • Hi, was just wondering if anyone knew if you had to book a space at the Greenside Place (Omni) car boot sale or if you can just turn up? Hoping to go this weekend but would like as much information as possible before going! :D
  • No need to book, just turn up, best before 7 a.m to guarantee a space (cost £15, no large vans/trailers). Not allowed to set up until 8.30 a.m or leave before 1 p.m. (horn sounded).Tables and rails for hire but easier to bring your own to avoid queueing or running out.Very busy, so have at least two people manning your stall.

Check out this great video on dealers called "edinburgh car boot strippers" on Youtube.
  • I am moving and have a lot of household items (everything from clothing and jewellery to cookware and picture frames) to sell. Some items aren't worth much, but I do have some fairly nice items that I wouldn't be willing to part with for 50p. Is the Greenside Omni car boot the best place to go to sell items this time of year? I really just want to unload everything and make a bit of money, I'm not too bothered at not making a lot, but hearing that things sell for so cheaply, is it worth it? Also, do they offer table hire at the Omni sale?

Any other advice about being a first-time seller at a car boot sale?

    Thanks for your advice!
