Sandpaper good value one pack 25 sheets, another 50 sheets
  • I'm something of an amateur engineer and I've bought things in Poundland to take apart for components.

Their LED keyring torches (2 pack for a pound) got me a white and blue LED for less than the 1-off cost of either LED separately. And they weren't even soldered in.

Their audio/video leads and adapters are no worse than the ones sold in electrical shops for about 5 times the price.

Their car cassette CD adapter (looks like a cassette, has a cable you plug into the earphone socket of a CD or MP3 player) contains a reasonable stereo cassette tape head.

I needed half a dozen small electronic flash units for close-up photography. Poundland 'disposable' flash cameras were the cheapest way to get them (yes, I am well aware of the hazards involved in working on these, I do not recomend anyone takes such a camera apart unless they have electronic experience. The charge stored on the main capacitor can be lethal). Incidentally, these cameras seem to be recycled. At least one of mine has a previous owner' s name written on the inside.

I needed a cheap microphone to test a tape recorder. Poundland sold them at 2 for a pound. OK, cheap and nasty, but no worse than ones in the local electrical shop for 7 quid a time.

I needed a couple of sprit level vials to level a large-format camera. Poundland sold a 'Laser guided level' for a pound. Taking it apart supplied not only the 2 vials I needed but also what seems to be a laser diode. Just look at the 1-off price of those in the electronic catalogues. In this case, the vials, laser diode, and switch were pretty good parts, the plastic case mouldings were poor, with lots of flash. My guess is that these were assembled from good-quality suplus or recycled components, put into a new case.

They had a box of rubber O-rings (I think 125 of them) for a pound. Sold for
mending water taps. They have many other uses!

I've also picked up a couple of small Lego sets for a pound each.

    I will not buy :

Tools. I am not rich enough to buy cheap tools...

Medical stuff. It's probably OK, but I don't want to risk my health

Mains electrical accessories (sockets, light switches, etc). I prefer to use a known name-brand for safety reasons.
  • Poundland are selling Seven Seas Vitamin and Mineral Tonic. Had a look in Superdrug and it was £4.59.

Quite heavy and chunky sellotape dispenser with 6 rolls for a quid in Poundland.
    Great value, I'd say.
  • Picked up mens Sanex 'active' shower gel today 400ml also Sanex mens roll on anti- perspirant 'active' fragrance again.

The deodorants are £1.48 or more in superdrug and boots (although they are BOGOF in S'drug at the moment so cheaper there for now) and the smaller 250ml size shower gels were £2.59 (could have been £2.19 - cant quite remember) in Boots.

  • A first visit to poundland today.

Spent £12 (petrol not included) today and drove a return journey of 45 miles to do it (just for a change of scenery really and to hunt down some offers I seen elsewhere on the site).

Among other bits and bobs I got the following....

Kids toys - Avoid Knights and Hereos sword and axe set - sword broke within 5 mnutes of getting home and axe within 10 minutes. Couldn't say my 4 year old was actually being very physical either.
He also managed to snap rip one of the 2 for £1 halloween masks where it's elastic strap around the head bit was (within 7 minutes).

thing was he was actually verging on being careful - you have no hope if you have a lively kid.

The 2 little ones liked the haloween glow in the dark skeleton (ok if you are less than 10 feet from it and it is genuinely dark), the tripods and axe type things aren't broken yet so only a few weeks to Haloween parties.

I got Stolen game for the PC for well ......... £1
3 pkts of ibuprofen for a pound was pretty good too.

Didn't get the mp3 player speakers or xbox dance mat that I really wanted (Livingston store).
