Clarification of Permissible Topics in OS, please.

Recently a thread in Old Style, "Boot Fair Wishlist 2006" was moved by a Board Guide to the Ebay and Other Auctions board.
This surprised me so I queried this and was answered within that thread and clearly stated by the BG that all Boot Fair threads are now to be moved to the Ebay Board (despite the context of that thread having nothing to do with selling goods nor the idea of buying goods at boot fairs to sell on Ebay).
Yet, despite this, I have since noticed that older car boot fair threads within the OS board (which the BG claimed had been moved) have recently appeared on the front page of the OS forum and have *not* been removed to the Ebay board, despite the content of those posts specifically referring to buying/selling boot fair goods on Ebay.

Today a new thread has been posted in OS: Saved so much money at the Car Boot Today This is very much in keeping with the Boot Fair Wish List thread which was moved and ideal as a continuation of the Wish List thread, thus keeping like things together.

There seems to be some inconsistency of the moving/not moving of threads and it is becoming totally confusing and very difficult to know any more *what* is permitted for discussion and even, *who* is/isn't allowed to discuss certain subjects within OS.

Ultimately, we all want to put things in their rightful place in the first instance. Boot Fairs, Charity Shops, Jumble Sales, Second Hand Shops where oh where are we supposed to post: Old Style? Ebay? Shop But Don't Drop?

Please, please, please,
may we, the members, have some clarification (and consistency!) on which topics are permitted to be discussed on OS and which could/should and will be moved?

TIA

Personally I would think that any venue where items can be sold including ebay, Amazon, boot fairs etc could easily be considered relevant to the Ebay (and other auctions) thread, maybe if there is some confusion we could ask for the title of that board to be amended to show that all selling venues are welcomed?

It certainly seems to fit more easily on that board than it does on old style, or shop but don't drop boards but would be happy to be guided by the Team on this one.

Appreciate your comments Soo, but Old Stylers generally aren't discussing Boot Fairs in the context of selling. And I think this is where all the confusion stems from to be honest!

The relevance for Old stylers, in the main, is in the context of picking up 2nd hand bargains (money saving) or what they are going to do with their purchases in terms of recycling/environmental issues.

We also discuss where to buy bicarb/vinegar in bulk, which strictly speaking should be put in "I Wanna" but remain in OS because it's in the context of cleaning with them.

Now, if it is decided that *all* boot fair threads belong in Ebay and other Auctions, so be it - but on that basis then, *all* should then be moved, surely? Perhaps you can now see why I ask the question? ;)

  • Hi Queenie

We've had a couple of questions about this and Squeaky has asked what we think too. He was moving them to the eBay board but as there have been so many queries about it he wanted to get our opinion. I think it's one of those topics that depends on an individual's viewpoint.

I've told him I think they car boot sale threads are more suited to Old Style but that's just my opinion and as I don't use the OS board as much as all of you (except for this afternoon to find a bread pud recipe - it's smelling really tasty already :) ) I think it's worth doing a poll to see what everyone thinks :)

The way I view it Wirm is that none of the boards seem to quite fit the subject of car boots, but since the ebay (and other auctions) board is the only board concerned with selling goods it seemed to be the most logical.

That's really why I wondered if the bracketed bit on the ebay board needed to be amended to include all selling venues, not just auctions? After all one of our most compelling threads is about selling books on Amazon and I hold Apprentice Tycoon entirely responsible for getting us all hooked on there  , and that is just a selling venue not an auction.

Agreed Soo, but in OS we're talking about boot fair finds and what we're on the look out for (Wish List) for our homes/hobbies/etc. Which really doesn't have anything to do with selling.

This is where it gets difficult Queenie as of course the ebay board isn't only for sellers, we get buyers as well asking questions or asking for help.

It's difficult to know how to deal with all the car boot threads, but it would seem a much better idea to keep them together somehow as otherwise information is just being duplicated.

 Yes, I know Soo. It's one of those iffy one's.

By the same token, the boot fair threads, as they stand *aren't* being kept together and the thread posted today in OS is very much a duplicate of my Wish List themed one. Neither being about selling. To an OS'er a car boot is merely an uptodate version of the humble jumble and traditionally your humble jumble was run by an organisation and was discussed in the context of what bargains you picked up and what you did with them (my Mum made rugs from old coats from jumble sales).

By the same token, I do agree that the selling on Amazon and the Selling on Ebay for Pin Money were clearly about selling and deserved to be moved.

  • If you don't mind, so we keep all the discussion in one place and everyone that's interested in it sees all the discussion, can we continue it on the poll thread and I'll lock this one :)
