I agree that if it's non advertised in store or you are not advised by the checkout operator, then it's very underhand to charge full price especially as many of these offers consist of 2 for 1. All I can say is in my experience, my local store has the saver card offers clearly marked and you are advised by the checkout operators that you need your card for the offers. At the end of the day, if you want the offer, you get a card - simple as that :-)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. As this system is in operation, I would fully expect to be asked at the checkout if I had a loyalty card. (As happens in Tesco, Boots etc) It was not mentioned to me but on reflection maybe I expect too much. (The assistant who served me did not utter a single word throughout the transaction. No please or thank you, can you sign here etc, she had a face like a wet weekend. Although her rudeness wound me up, that isn't the issue here)
In this particular store I didn't see any signs, just the one above the product I wanted to buy which read BOGOF and a list of each flavour included in the offer.Laughter is the sun

I'd report them to trading standards and the asa(or is this just for tv & billboards?) for misleading advertising and dodgy selling practices. There should be something on the 2 for 1 advert that says it is only for saver card customers. Then there should be information on how to get a saver card. I wonder if my mum has one of those thingie's, she usually shops in there. I must admit I haven't been in there for an age. This isn't going to intice me to go in there, I have one too many loyalty cards at the moment. ;D0

This sounds disgracegful! What a way to run a business - how many custoemrs would get home then check their receipts & vow never to return again due to being 'overcharged'. I have been into our Sommerfield on a few occasions & haven't seen the signs for the scheme. Hearing about their attitude to customers it doesn't make me anxious to go back in there & buy stuff either!
Thanks for the warning on this. If I'm near Sommerfield again then I'll have another look for signs but you would really expect BOGOF to be just that not BOGOF-but-only-for-special-people!Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out0 -

I hate to repeat myself here, but all the mailings I get from the local store say, '2 for 1 for saver card customers'...and all the offers in store are clearly marked 'saver card savings' or something similar. Like most other stores, not every store is going to be the same, but the local somerfield close to me clearly illustrates the need to get a card for the savings. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I wonder if anyone might be tempted to go into the store, load a trolley high with the BOGOF goods..........especially if there are any freezer goods........reach the checkout and tell them they can't afford to buy every item........then walk out in protest. ::)
Why? Sounds to me like this would just waste your time. Someone at the bottom of the food chain (slight pun intended) will have to put it all back, and probably no-one of influence would hear about it. To have your voice heard, why not write to someone with power in Somerfield?0 -
Whenever I go into Somerfield and want to buy something that requires a Savercard, I just tell them at the till I dont have a Savercard, they take a card and application form of the stack by the till, swipe the card through and tell me to fill the form in.
I then just chuck the card and the form in the bin by the exit on the way out.
Done this about half a dozen times now.
And before any complains about waste, it was not me that thought up this stupid system, and I am damned if I am going to carry another piece of plastic around.
I too would just leave the shopping if they refused to issue a new card. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I think it's a fair practise IF the sign on the product says BOGOF *card holders only*. This is fine, not if the sign says BOGOF and the wall poster says only for card holders.
Any savvy consumer should know by now to read the small print, if you do not......Sense is not common.0 -
I don't often go into Somerfields but unless I had seen this thread on here I think I might have been caught out - you see the big offer signs but don't zoom in on the small print. When I got to the checkout I asked about the card and she produced one for use straightaway, take home and fill out the details and bring back another time. I can't understand if they can hand over the loyalty card just like that to a rare customer why they are only doing the offers for layalty card customers unless its for sneaky profits. Its very unfair on vunerable folk such as the elderly. I think I might write to Somerfields stating this, perhaps it ought to be advertised a bit more.0

I dont see the point of them handing them out at the till either, unless as you say its to catch people out who dont know to ask for a card and might only realise when they get home that theyve been charged for both items. I think this is a really unfair way of running BOGOF offers. As you said if the writings in small print on large posters, whos going to see it?
I for one am glad we dont have one of these stores locally!!I never knew saving money was so much fun)
