Lamb shanks- recipe anyone?

  • Had a look and can't seem to find out what to do with 'cheats' minted and gravy lamb shanks. I brought a couple reduced in Aldi and would like to cook them in the slow cooker tomorrow, as we'll be out all afternoon and wanted to come in and have dinner ready. They're the ready to roast kind that you take out the bag and roast from frozen.

    My questions are

Can i cook them from frozen in the SC?
When would you add the pots & carrots? Was going to throw them all in together at the start.
Do I need to add a little extra water?

    Thanks in Advance

They only take about an hour in the oven, don't think the SC will get hot enough to cook them thoroughly from frozen.
How long will you be out for?

  • We'll be out for 3-4 hours, but I can put them on first thing. I think I'm going to defrost them over night and then pop them in the SC at 10ish in the morning. I've never tried them in the SC before, so it'll be a bit of a gamble. I'll defrost them then put them on a bed of chunky carrots, potatoes and a few onions halves. They come in a sticky minty & rosemary sauce so it should all melt over the veg.

I'm still a little worried about the veg 'sticking' on the bottom, so will pop a little water in at the start too. Not sure how much to make sure it doesn't dry out though?

  • Which meats do you use quintwins? I've only done a gammon in the slow cooker and it was lovely, but need a little more confidence and experience! Am going to defrost overnight, to make sure it's going to be edible tomorrow night. x

Pork is lovely in slow cooker - just stick in oven for last 30 mins to crisp up crackling.
Whole chickens last forever when done in SC.
    Turkey breast is good
Cheap cuts of beef come out really tender.
Gammon as you have found out is wonderful.
Anything works in the SC really!

I rub a little butter on the skin and squirt with some lemon juice, put on high for 1 hour then down on low for about 6-7 hours - absolutely delicious.

I put it into the SC (so old that it only has one temperature) and leave overnight. Tender but a bit bland so I use the meat in spicier recipes.
