  • Hi carlamagee,

What you have done sounds delicious. The only thing I might add would be some garlic, but that's just because I love garlic with lamb.

It will depend on the individual slow cooker but if I was you I'd turn it up to the high setting for the first hour or so then turn it down and it should be ready by 5pm.

    Pink

oh yeah, i forgot to put in that added some garlic!!!! thanks pink-winged....ill go change the setting now

Not quite OS, but as a treat I bought myself 2 lamb shanks in M&S yesterday. £9 reduced to £3. One's going in the freezer, and the other is dinner for me, tonight and tomorrow night.

I've never cooked lamb shank before, so any ideas? I have a vague memory of having it with lentils once (I've a box of puy lentils in the cupboard). I've a fairly well stocked basics cupboard. Ta.
  • MMMM lamb shank!
Braise it slowly, with some onions (and other veg-carrots etc), tomatoes and red wine and rosemary, at least an hour and half, preferably 2, serve with mash and cabbage.
It does go well with puy lentils too, but my OH can't stand lentils so we don't have that
there was a slowcooker recipe in delicious magazine a while ago-looks really good and rich-thats basically the way I cook it (in oven NOT slow cooker)

I like lamb shanks but I've never seen them at a supermarket? Are they a butchers or M&S item?

My first port of call for cooking it wuold be a slow cooker - I'd need to find a yummy recipe though ... shouldn't be hard on here ;)

Common in my local Asda, Morrisons & Tesco...and also from the market or my butcher.

I usually braise on Gas 3 for about 2.5 - 3 hours - Brown it off in a little oil in a pan, then double layer foil-line a roasting tin with plenty of overlap and add shank, a thin sliced onion, 2 cloves garlic (if liked), black pepper, some dried rosemary (or fresh sprigs if you have it), then add the juices from the browning pan with a little wine or hot stock and a big tablespoon of redcurrant or sloe jelly added to deglaze, seal up the foil parcel & bung in the oven!

I usually serve with parsnip mash & gravy made from the juices & more redcurrant or sloe jelly.

  • I do them in the slow cooker, onions, carrots, stock and mint sauce, absolutely delicious. You can either brown first in pan and just chuck them straight in

Got 4 lamb shanks in my slow cooker right now. Got mine at Sainsburys butcher for £5 a kilo, so ended up being just over £7 for the 4.
I browned them in a pan, put them in the preheated slow cooker with a tin of chopped tomatoes and lamb stock, fried off some chopped onions and garlic and added that to the slow cooker, with rosemary, salt and pepper and a dash of red wine vinegar and Worcestershire Sauce. Later on, I will add some sliced carrots and finally, a can of cannoleni beans.
Lovely with mashed potatoes and cabbage or spinach.
They end up with the meat falling off the bone.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • Theres a great Hugh Fearnley Wittingstall recipe on BBC.co.uk/food - just recipe search for orange braised lamb shanks.

Its a bit lighter than traditional recipes and has oranges, white wine, lamb stock and thyme in it....mmmm haven't had that for ages, must get some soon.

Whichever way you decide to cook them, enjoy.....
