Lamb shanks- recipe anyone?

Options
Thought I would have a go at these - in the slow cooker? Or better in the oven? Any ideas on how best to go about this - search didn't come up with anything but my search skills aren't the greatest :)

Thanks

I tend to brown my lamb shanks first and then fry some carrot, onions and celery in a little oil in the same pan. I take the veggies out and add a tablespoon of flour and then add 1/2 bottle (ish) of red wine and the same quantity of beef or lamb stock and a bay leaf. I then put everyting back in the pan, If I have some mushrooms I might add those. I let them bubble slowly for 2- 2 1/2 hours and if at the end the sauce isn't thick enough I take the meat out and reduce the sauce. I also like to put chopped parsley in at the end.

I have no exact quatities as I tend to throw what I fancy in, but it really is tasty, you also don't have to use the wine but could add a tablespoon or two of tomato puree instead.

I'd do the same as gingin but at the 'putting back in pan' stage pop it all in the SC

or just put them in SC on their own with a little water

  • I love Lamb shanks but.....does anyone else think the prices of them have gone up soooooooo much:confused: I use to be able to get 2 for £1-£2 from local butchers but now there £3 each sometimes more:eek:

I like them with minted/red wine sauce, served with parsnip and goat cheese mash...yummy!!

Thanks everyone for your ideas, will be having a go tonight (putting them in sc on low until tomorrow... mmmm)

I got mine from tesco- there are five in the pack and admittedly, they aren't huge, but the total pack price was £5.20 which I thought was great value. I agree with you penny-pincher in that they seem to be more expensive now than previously, proper ones anyway ie from butcher with loads of meat on them

We love lamb shanks in our house. A cheaper alternative is lamb knuckles - they are smaller, so don't look so spectacular, but are just as good.

I've got some lamb shanks that I'd like to cook today in the slow cooker.

How should I cook them and how long will they take?

That is so weird , you asking this question, I purchased 2 reduced lamb shanks yesterday from tesco`s and have just put them in my slow cooker with some minty gravy. I was also wondering how long they will take and dont expect them to be quick. so, any-one know the answer to how long they will need?
