I'd like to think that there are enough kind people in this world that if she asked to have someone's seat, they wouldn't hesitate to let her sit down, I would certainly give up my seat if asked.

But I don't think I should have to ask her if she wants my seat, it's like im assuming that she can't cope with being pregnant and standing up, some people might find it patronising.

Like others have said, it might be more comfortable, there are plenty of other discomforts and ailments you get whilst pregnant, standing can be beneficial/less painful.

Anyhow, if a pregnant lady asked for my seat, train, bus, plane, whatever, I'd let her sit down.

    Lloyds CC £1500

    Catalogue £17
    Loan £1700
  • For all the selfish people who wouldn't stand for a pregnant woman, let's hope her unborn child comes across them when he is older and is a brain surgeon or the like, and shows them the same dismissive selfish attitude that they showed his/her mother!

I travel by train all the time, but when my father had a stroke and was dying he hadn't shown me the courtesy of giving me any notice so I hadn't booked! Fortunately the guard saw how upset I was and plonked me in first class, no question! Lucky I didn't need to rely on you lot!!

You've assumed the original question mentioned the pregnant woman had to travel unexpectedly, and replied on that basis. Would you have answered the same if the woman could have pre-booked her seat if she'd wanted?

No I haven't. If you re-read my post, you'll see that I didn't comment on the pregnant woman at all.

My comments were purely based on the replies of others, specifically those who assumed she could have pre-booked....... as they did.

I asked with regards to a comment made by someone else about my comment:

"And where exactly did I make that assumption about disabilities??"

    and you responded with:

"I'd guess it's on the assumption that not all disabilities are evident by just looking at the person?"

You have directly responded to my question about my so called assumption!! If it was general conversation then don't reply to my post.

    :wall:

You've clearly not read the thread then!

And the general response from those who are saying that they wouldn't (and not for disability reasons!) give up their seat as she hadn't booked. I'm sorry if you disagree but that's allowing her to suffer for not doing something. i.e. punishing her!
Yes I have read the thread but although I quoted something you'd said, it was because I was commenting - in general - on something that had occurred to me on reading what you'd said.

Jebus, I'm really not going to get into a bickering match with you over it  All this you said this, you said that, read the post, you haven't read the post, yada yada malarky is way too negative for my liking. Chill!

5 hour train journey, busy train??? there really is no option, if i was doing this trip it would take god himself to get me out of my booked seat. I find that people often attempt to take advantage of their "condition" whether it be pregnant, or other, at the financial and morale expense of the diligent rest of us and i for one am sick of this nanny state we are now living in.

To those of you that think this a harsh response, think again, the woman is making a train journey on a bank holiday weekend for gods sake, she knows that it is going to be packed to the rafters. If she did not pre book and pay for a seat, then she is either stupid or falls into the bracket of person i described above, either way she would not be getting anywhere near my seat and i would actually find it offensive that people around me would feel morally blackmailed into giving up their seat!!

Calm down, I was only asking!

You didn't mention the pregnant woman but you did, in a roundabout way, allude to the fact she was travelling unexpectedly. I just pointed out that wasn't part of the brief  On your assumption that she was travelling unexpectedly, you snidely remarked about other people's mothers being proud of them. That's really not very nice imho.

You didn't actually answer my question but never mind, I don't really care one way or another, seeing as it's a hypothetical scenario :rotfl:
  • Yes I would give up my seat, even though I'm fat (not out of choice) and my knees hurt.

    1. It is not safe to asume that the pregnant woman could and didn't book.
    2. It is not her choice, but it is hard, and someone's got to do it
    3. Last time I gave up my seat, I ended up standing next to a stunning girl who had just done the same. We went out together and .. (no we didn't get married, but had a few very memorable months together.)

Eh heavily pregnant surely means almost due. I think at that point its time to get maternity leave and prepare for the arrival.

    You said the following:
Pregnant women should not travel on public transport.
    so don't eh me!:rotfl:
