MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you give up a £50 train seat for a pregnant woman?

Yes I would, I would sit on the floor near the doors or walk up to the end of the train which might be less busy, both of which she would have a lot more trouble than me doing. In my experience, long distance trains are only busy for certain postions of the journey, so after an hour or so I expect I'd get another seat anyway, and if I didn't, I didn't, I'll still get to my destination which is what I paid my £50 for.
Though as graemecarter said, I would also probably wait to see if anyone else is going to give up their seat first - I really hate standing on trains so if there was someone who minded less I'd rather they stand!
The pregnant lady may have had to make a last minute journey and probably paid £150 for the priviledge of standing on a packed train, so I don't think it is justification to not give up your seat by saying 'I booked, so she could have too'.Debt at LBM (17/10/08) £5727.61 Debt free date 31/08/090 -
I think that it's very presumptious to assume that just because you had the foresight to book a seat she should have too.
How do you know she's not travelling to go and see her mother who has suddenly been taken ill, or for some other emergency which meant she was unable to book ahead?
While I would be reluctant to give up my £50 seat it's the right thing to do.
People are often too quick to judge. I agree there are times when some/many will take advantage of circumstances, however, for those who don't it's a welcomed gesture.0 -
I ABSOLUTELY WOULD give up my seat!
I have two young children (3 and 5) and if they were with me I'd give it up also - and hopefully teach them a bit about human decency (something that many of the posters above obviously know nothing about!!!) If I did have my kids with me I'd probably make a big 'huff and puff' about it while loudly commenting to them "Yes, mummy does think it's very rude that someone doesn't offer this nice lady a seat....but don't worry, we're nice people and will give her our seat, even though that big strong man over there trying to ignore her while pretending to fiddle with his phone could stand SO much more easily than either of us!!!" :rotfl:
What a shame that your two children will grow up thinking that it is nice and polite to make loud remarks about strangers and assumptions about them based purely on their gender and appearance.
Perhaps one of your nice, fit, well brought up children would have already offered their seat so that Mummy wouldn't have to?
Or you could have your non paying 3 year old on your lap to free a space for her?
Personally, I'd just tell her to go and sit in first class, where she will be comfortable and won't have to put up with being made a spectacle of by predjudiced people with an axe to grind.0 -
I hope that i would be generous enough to give up my seat. It is more than likely that I could find somewhere else to sit for a while during the journey whereas a heavily pregnant woman would find this impossible.
But I have to say that there are some very sad people that contribute to these surveys. Hopefully they are not typical of the general population of this country.0 -
Im in disbelief at the utter rudeness of some of the people on here. Digusting. If your not pregnant get the **** up off the seat. She is carrying a BABY in her WOMB, idiots!
Who the hell gives a damn!?!? What's that got to do with me? Why should it bother me in the slightest? I paid for my seat, she didn't. She can sit up on the roof for all I care...SKIPS STONES FOR FUDGE0 -
I would definitely give up my seat, without huffing, puffing and making someone else feel bad (what if that big, strong man has a heart problem or bad circulation?).
So it'd be a bit of standing, not so bad in the grand scheme of things.0 -
I certainly hope you're trying to be sarcastic. If not, you need a good smack.
Great, that's all we need - another violent idiot in the world.
Do you always resort to threats of violence when people's views differ from yours? Were you a bully at school? Do you hit your wife if she says something you don't like. Get a life!SKIPS STONES FOR FUDGE0 -
Of course I would offer her my seat, even though I would find it really difficult with a Heel spur to stand for any length of time.
After reading some of the previous comments I can obviously count myself as one of lifes selfless people apparently, but that makes me sad that others can be so ruthless.

Why should being pregnant suddenly grant you special status? Getting pregnant in today's day & age is hugely irresponsible, and is contributing to the death of the planet. END OF STORY
