Thanks belfastgirl. Unfortunately I don't have a breadmaker, couldn't afford a decent one and am ALWAYS too slow on the draw on Freecycle!
It isn't the gluten that's the problem - I can eat oats & stuff.A budget is like a speed sign - a LIMIT not a TARGET!!

Thanks dawkins. The book sounds really interesting - I'll try to pick it up from the Library.
I'll certainly try a 'slow-baked' loaf, but biscuits etc bother me too so maybe it's not that simple. It could be worse - I could be coeliac and I'm not thank heavens.A budget is like a speed sign - a LIMIT not a TARGET!!

You could try using spelt flour - while it's still a relative of wheat, it's meant to be good for people who are intolerant to it.I like you. I shall kill you last.0

Hi again
I've found a thread on wheat-free baking, so I'll add this one to that to keep ideas together.

After eating a fresh rye baguette in the small chain Apostrophe at Gatwick recently, it highlighted how useless UK supermarkets/other sandwich shops are at offering non-wheat fresh products. I agree with other moneysavers posts that it's a good idea to bake your own when at home, not only due to money, but because long life wheat-free baked goods tend to taste terrible. However, there should be more choice when eating out too!
Apostrophe is great value for anyone who likes good food, needs a wheat-free diet or just forgot to take food with them to the airport! They have branches around London as well as Gatwick. For £4.30, I had a greek salad stuffed rye baguette, with a free iced lemon water from the tray kept filled in the middle of the cafe. The baguette was so hearty that the cafe assistant cut it in half and put half in a bag for me, making my lunch cost £2.15, and my dinner cost £2.15 - not bad for the 'captive audience' traveller market.
I'd appreciate anyone else joining me in sending your own email to the major UK supermarkets and sandwich chains about making fresh wheat-free baked goods available. You can find email addresses for customer services very quickly on the net in most cases. Here's a suggested email wording:
Only one grain is available in your bakery in the average store - wheat.
How about including some fresh rye or spelt baked goods instead? And prepared sandwiches/baguettes using the same?
We don't all want the long life wheat-free bread that generally tastes awful.
It's about UK supermarkets gave people fresh baked goods choice outside wheat!0 -
Morrisons sell spelt and rye bread. Great for my husband who is not coeliac but gets poorly when he eats ordinary wheat. Spelt flour, he is great with. The loaf costs about £1 I think and is lovely - nice and soft.0

Hi not sure if posting this in right place. My wee sister has decided she is following gluten free diet (long story but its all in her head!!) and I having all family for boxing day buffet. I usually buy lots ready made aprty food with saved up tesco vouchers so all i have to do is stick in oven.
Any ideas for the fussy one? We not really a salad family so dont want to do much of that as it wont get eaten. How hard is gluten free pastry to make? was thinking make a large quiche xx0
