How long are you planning to keep this car? If it is for a long time, then my view would be go for it, treat yourself. If you can afford it, and you like it, and still have money aside for a rainy day, then why not. I know that may not be very moneysaving, but there is more to it than that, otherwise we'd all run old, cheap cars.

If you can live with a Peugeot, I'm not sure why you would want the larger Golf Plus. I'm guessing there were no deals on the ordinary Golf? The Golf Plus doesn't seem to hold its value as well as other VW cars.

Have you discounted another Skoda? They are cracking cars, I really wish we'd kept our Octavia at the time, bt I was offered a Passat as a company car and took it. The Skoda was much, much better!

Is the Peugeot you're looking at petrol or diesel? I believe, from friends who have the 206 1.6HDi that they are cracking little cars, very economical and cheap to run.

    Happy choosing.

LOL dope - as if .....................(appreciate the pm by the way :))

Decided on the Peugeot 207, test drove it again - brilliant.

On way back stop at VW dealer - black shiny Golf Plus sitting there new with £3k off - lots of room for dogs - high off the ground, every little refinement possible - it was amazing BUT they wont take scrappage deal and it would work out £4k more than the Peugeot. Look at the Peugeot again, hmm, it does look a bit tacky in comparison ......................

Ive lay awake half the night worrying about it - silly thing is, I keep thinking I dont deserve a car as posh as that :) My mother would kick me up the butt if she were still alive, bless her. But we have never had anything that new or high spec so I keep thinking, do we need it that posh at that price.

The saga continues. The Verve special deal is up on 30 May.

There is an imminent new golf plus coming out, based on the new golf.

I thought the 'new' Golf Plus was just a facelifted old shape, rather than based on the all new Golf - or have I got that wrong? (Very probably!)

    Apologies - you're right!

it sounds like the dealer is discounting an old model one to get it away.

Yes the new MkV1 Golf is now out and the MV1 Golf Plus. The dealer tells me that a normal Golf cant be delivered til December!!! He can get some Golf Plus though ??? Taking into account the fact we could get scrappage plus part exchange on my old Skoda, it would make sense to go for the Mark V1 rather than the discounted Mk V.

However, if anyone knows where a Mk V1 Golf hatch is about rather than the Plus, Id be happy to know. I cant believe people will wait that long for a new car.

We seem to have moved a lot up market now and I find it difficult to get my head round the money. Today we looked at a series 1 BMW and A3 Audi - both too small for us, could hardly get in and out of them. But both showrooms were packed - people signing up for all sorts - mostly the higher range of Series 3 and 5!!

Just to throw a spanner into the entire works - why are you buying new? Why not a 1 year old for a lot less money?

Many papers were reporting the value of the scrappage bonus only lasts around 88 days, before your gain is wiped out through depreciation.
