Saw a 6 month old demonstrator yesterday at main dealer at under £9k and 1k on clock. Metallic paint, mats seem to be the only extras but still a new one comes out at about £12.5k as far as I can make out.

Its diesel, low emissions so £35 a year tax. They have also offered me £1250 for my 8 year old fabia, which seems fair (its started playing up a bit lately).

SO, before I rush there today and sign up for it - anyone know of any really bad downsides to this vehicle/model please?

they have very good review and info...

only thing i would say is - it is still a lot of money - a 3/4 year old car could prove much better value

Thanks Michael, but I rather like the idea of the manufacturer/dealer warranty.
  • unreliable and overpriced, you will spend many hours at the dealership

how many miles do you do a year as you need to do a lot to make a diesel worth while

I have had a Polo for the last 7 years without any trouble, still got original exhaust! If you don't buy it let me know where it is so that I can.

I had a 1.4TDi A2 - if I had to haev one of my previous cars back it would be this one. Loads to the gallon, servicing every 25,000 miles, cheap insurance, not a single fault in 50,000 miles.

As always with diesels you need to be doing the mileage - not only for fuel cost reasons, but to stop components failing due to lack of miles. Regular motorway runs are essential - unless you are a taxi driver or driving instructor doing 30,000 a year.

If you are doing 5,000 a year in town forget a diesel.

Motorpoint seem to have a load of these at £9700.

I think they're a good car and under 9k seems a good price

Sounds like a good deal Hethmar.

VW parts are reasonable - and they make good cars.

If you like it, it suits your needs etc., can't see why not! Its not French and its not Fiat, its not a Mercedes. So I cannot see why you would not want to buy it.

I assume it has enough room for the furry ones... :D

Apparently those are from abroad, so a bit of a worry re resale.

Thanks everyone for the input. I only do about £10k a year though, mostly running around, so I hope that wont be a problem.

Jean, the guy showed me that the back seats can drop down and the dogs can go in there with a guard.

In the book Satisfaction by JD Power, VW came out by far as the worst car for long term reliability. They also have some of the highest depreciation in the industry (anyone that thinks they don't get your calculator out). At 10k a year you'll be costing yourself a fortune by buying a diesel, they make very little sense uless you're doing over 15k a year and that mostly likely 20k with the price difference now between petrol and diesel.

Get yourself 3 cyclinder Japanese car such as a Yaris, Colt, Sirion or a Hyundai i20, they will all be far better, cheaper cars and still do fantastic miles per gallon. Forget £35 tax it makes hardly and difference.

Around here diesel is only 3p more than petrol at the moment - the days of 10p+ have gone for now.

At 10k per year it's marginal, but the 1.4TDi is an excellent motorway cruiser - once at 50 get into 5th and no need change gear. This isn't the case for a three pot petrol.
