Personally, I'd always pick diesel, but then as I say, I've driven diesel for the last 15 years.

I'm a long time diesel driver too, but like you, in this instance i think petrol is worth reviewing.

daveyjp - do you mean the petrol 1.4 is useless?

Not useless, just not up there with modern petrol engines. 75 bhp isn't much to haul the car around. The latest Ford 1.4 has almost 100bhp. The diesel has similar output (75 bhp), but the increased torque makes the car easier to drive as you don't need to constantly change gear to get performance.

As others have said you need to drive one and see if you are happy with it. Get a good test drive though - try and borrow both types over a full day so you can do different types of roads and load the car to see how it performs with some weight on board.

    Same advice test drive it.

I do advise part of this test drive is on a motorway if you intend using it on them.

I've driven one and after 60mph the 1.6HDi was very noisy in the cabin.

Thanks Davey - have been today and driven both the 1400 and 1600 diesel and was very surprised how nippy they are compared with the 1400 VW Polo. Pulled away like a petrol car. Very pretty car, sports spec trim. Very tempting with nearly £5k off the MMRP including scrappage and my old Skoda. Did do 70 mph on a dual carriageway. Road noise a bit loud, but nothing terrible.

Going back to the VW dealer on Friday to have some more test drives.

    Much appreciate your input.

    a) all new diesels have particulate filters (EU regs)
    b) the only time they get cleaned out is on motorway runs
    c) and even taxi drivers are switching to petrol as a result

puts me off the idea of diesel till they design out this issue

Nothing wrong with particle filters assuming you don't keep the car driving round a town and never get the revs up even just driving in to low a gear now and again to help clear it out and don't use any decient fuel

not all taxi drivers are going petrol

not all new diesels have pdf filters

New polo due October - there's a review in today's Auto Express.

It looks very good and the 1.2TSI sounds like it will have a good blend of power and economy.

Of course this should mean some good deals on the outgoing model, and higher depreciation too.

Yes fatbelly, I saw that, which has made me hesitate a bit on buying a Polo now. Dont know if we can hang on til October as the skoda is giving a few little signs of a coming problem and also the scrappage car will need another MOT if we exchange after July :( (Nothing is every straight forward is it)

I think we may go tomorrow and actually bite the bullet, work out the finances and check out a new Golf instead.

LOL dope - as if .....................(appreciate the pm by the way :))

Decided on the Peugeot 207, test drove it again - brilliant.

On way back stop at VW dealer - black shiny Golf Plus sitting there new with £3k off - lots of room for dogs - high off the ground, every little refinement possible - it was amazing BUT they wont take scrappage deal and it would work out £4k more than the Peugeot. Look at the Peugeot again, hmm, it does look a bit tacky in comparison ......................

Ive lay awake half the night worrying about it - silly thing is, I keep thinking I dont deserve a car as posh as that :) My mother would kick me up the butt if she were still alive, bless her. But we have never had anything that new or high spec so I keep thinking, do we need it that posh at that price.

The saga continues. The Verve special deal is up on 30 May.
