buffy - i share an office with the manager who leads on observations - lots of the tutors get nervous and normally fab ones fall apart - 1 did in front of the inspectors last year so you aren't the first to feel nervous. How about involving the observer? Give them some work to do - it gives you the upper hand.
I have be observed twice next month as long as my short course goes ahead during June - it was only in March I was observed twice for my probation!!! I have my formal annual one and then an observation for my teaching qualification.
4 observations in 4 months

buffy - think of your most intelligent sounding students and question them at the beginning of the lesson - so, can anyone remember what we covered last time? Tom? Get them to do the talking - it proves they are learning, which is Ofsted's big buzzword now.
We were told the big things for observation are
icebreaker evidence
initial assessment evidence
planning learning based on the initial assessment - and proof of that
lots of different activities to break the session up
Direct questioning of learners
Evidence of E+D gets big points - mention anything you can in your lesson plan.

someone sits in at the back and make notes about what you are doing. My pace is always really bad and I nearly always forget some instructions cos I am too busy concentrating on what he is doing at the back of the room.
I can't do it. It always go wrong and if it keeps going wrong I will lose my job.
My results are good - consistently good, and my classes pick to do the subject further up the school. The kids like me my lessons are fine when no one is watching me.
I am so upset.
Trouble is honey, the more you worry about it the more stressed you will be tomorrow and then it becomes more likely that it will go wrong. So, you need to take control of the random worrying.
I'll let you into a little secret, I get horrible stage fright. No one knows, they all think I am mrs 'nothing phases me'. But sometimes I'm so bad I get physically sick.
I know I am good at my job but there is a part of me that feels that everyone else is better and I'm just blagging it. For years after every gig i think to myself 'fooled them again' And honestly, that's how I feel, I'm fooling everyone.
So, what do I do? well, before I leave the house I let the nerves do their thing, I don't try to hold it in or block it out. I spend a fair bit of time in the bathroom
Once the full force of that panic is over, I breathe deeply, close my eyes and focus. I find that my mind works overtime a bit, I get the 'crap it's all going to go wrong, I'm terrible, I can't do this' thoughts, but I also get the odd, 'yes I can, I've done this loads of times' why am I worried, I'm pretty good at it really' thoughts too. So, I start to focus on my very best gigs ever, the times when I really got the buzz, those moments on stage when you see the whole band become one instrument and subconsciously each band member moves towards the kit' I hold that thought and keep it there... and I tell myself I can blag it again. Once I get to that point I find the adrenalin works in my favour and I perform better than when I'm not so nervous. And here's the thing, everyone else is exactly the same, they all try to tell you they are super confident and great at their job, but most of them are as insecure and worried as you are.
You need to find something in the room which is your focus spot, is there something you can look at, I dunno but think of anything that you can use to look at if you feel that things are getting out of control. It’s better to pause for a second or two to compose yourself than it is to let it all spiral. I have a black mark on a cymbal stand that I use. When you need it, look at it and remind yourself of the times you have felt really good and super confident at work.
Remember also that no one in that room wants you to fail, everyone wants you to do great, as you usually do, the only difference is someone else is there to see how good you are and how well you teach. Think of that person as someone who is there to learn from you too, they are learning your unique and individual style. And, it’s a style that obviously works really well doesn’t it? The kids clearly think so.:A

and - you know what? The observers get nervous too. They worry about the grading because at moderation, if they have got it wrong, they look like they don't know what they are doing, so half the time they are going to be worrying about making sure what they put down is correct!!!
