Whoa! The person who benefited from this scheme has posted on this forum! Those are about the only circumstances that make sense with this scheme.

There are thousands of people buying cars with similar circumstances. My mother is scrapping her 19 year old VW Polo and getting a £7k car for £5k. You can't get a better discount on these small urban cars without the scheme. From what I've read most the manufacturers have a waiting list for weeks on these small model cars but I can appreciate there is not much benefit for those seeking a more expensive car. This is because as previously said, the online brokers can give a better discount without the need to scrap a car.

1 in 5 cars were sold under the scrappage scheme last month, can't see how that is 'unpopular'.

BBC News: The industry body said that 33,026 cars were sold through the scrappage scheme in July, roughly one fifth of all registrations in that month.

If this is the case this is a good thing obviously in the very short term, it's all short term the vat cut, stamp duty etc etc etc..... But the funds will run out soon and then what?? Holding back reposessions etc ?? How long for??
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

So this dealer is giving an extra 1k off that they wouldn't be willing to give otherwise just becuse the govt is also giving you 1k off? Why would they not be willing to give the 1k discount anyway?

So in your example the actual saving is 1k not 2 - not saying that 1 k off 7k is not worth having, especially if buying the car anyway but economically speaking it is almost certainly cheaper per mile to buy same car second hand even with the extra 1k off.

well the idea is to buy smaller cars eg.

    £8K car -£2k is 25% off.

you kind of missed what the idea was, it was so people swaped for smaller more econmical cars.
    I think....

So the govt has spent £33m subsidising people who can afford to buy brand new cars - hardly very egalitarian is it. Many of whom would probably have bought their new car anyway and therefore providing zero benefit to anyone but the rich individuals getting the 1k off.

I wouldn't say my mother is rich, she scrapped a 19 year old VW Polo :) I wouldn't say rich people generally buy £7k cars either. I'd go as far as saying the scheme isn't really geared up for the rich at all.

I didn't buy a car last month, or this month. My tax money is directly going to someone else to buy a car. Er. Just a minute. Why doesn't the government give me some money, and I promise to spend it.

Either support everybody, or don't support anybody. So far I seem to be bailing out the banks, helping other people buy cars and not a fricking bean is coming my way.

Get lost Labour - you have screwed me each and every way, wrecked the economy - and still I get absolutely nothing out of it.

Yep, same here Mewbs, typical "new labour" !!!! up, yet again being "reactive" in government. Its funny in a way how in 96 I was praying(literally) for the Tories to be booted out and now 12 yrs down the line my feelings haven't changed except its "New Labour"...Ho Hum,life really is a b1tch.
It doesn't take a having a degree in economics to work out the scrappage scheme is short term and it won't make hardly any difference because car manufacturers have dillied and dallied and not moved with the times,it been a case of short term profit at the expense of long term security..............Look on the bright side, all the millions this will cost at least its keeping a few car dealers in work.........Just..

What they really should have done was give everyone an income tax cut, or give us all £1,000 to spend on anything we want too.
