Car Scrapage Scheme "Unpopular"

"Under the scheme, owners who scrap their old cars will receive a £1,000 subsidy from the government on a new one.
Manufacturers will provide at least a similar discount, and so far 38 have signed up."
38? :rotfl:"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
Does it mean 38 dealers? Or 38 people?0

Reading it again, I'm not sure now to be honest.
Oh, it's 38 manufacturers.

See, this is the thing, i didnt even know we HAD 38 manufacturers!
Must be counting places like online sites which sell cars direct to us.0 -
I was very interested in this scheme when I first heard about it. However after looking around at a few places, it seems that not all models are included. One dealer told us that the £2000 discount is on a sliding scale depending on which model I went for. Another said that I would only be eligible for the discount if I agreed to take out their finance deal.
On the whole I think it was all just some government sponsored advertising campaign for the car industry, and dealers have used this opportunity to up their prices.0 -

Nissan were on this morning, and said that this scheme saves people around 25%. Which was rubbish spin, but kind of true I guess if you went for the base model Micra.
Anyway, they said it was available on the Nissan Micra, Note and Quashqai (sp).
They also said they are inundated with enquiries and theres a limited amount....then the presenter stopped him from plugging any further

Hah, not even close to being the highest. Come over here to Brussels if you want to see what it looks like to be fleeced for tax. What goes around - comes around0 -

Nor did I. They must have some very abstract manufacturers on board.Hah, not even close to being the highest. Come over here to Brussels if you want to see what it looks like to be fleeced for tax.
It can't be as bad as Denmark can it?"I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
I agree it's basically a waste of time unless you're looking to buy a very cheap new car, in which case it might add up to a reasonable discount (all of which you'll lose in depreciation the minute you drive off the forecourt, but no matter).
However, a couple of thoughts about that original news report:A new survey suggests most people who have studied the scrappage scheme have decided not to take advantage of it.
Researchers from car price guide Parker's questioned 600 people online.
It found that 70% of respondents said the scheme was not generous enough, and overall 81% said they would not be taking advantage of it.
It's interesting spin if you think about it. Lets use the same facts but re-write it.
Researchers from car price guide Parker's questioned 600 people online.
It found that 30% of respondents said the scheme was generous enough, and overall 19% said they would be taking advantage of it.
Suddenly it reads quite differently despite the fact that it's the exact same information doesn't it?
More spin here:
With the scrappage scheme discounts, a brand new Volvo would have cost her in the region of £21,000. But she then found exactly the same model with less than 10,000 miles on the clock for £17,000. A saving of £4,000 proved irresistible.
You could equally argue that £4,000 extra to buy a £23K Volvo rather than someone's 10,000 mile secondhand example is pretty good value, they've written it as being terrible value. But that's just interpretation.
But either way, the fact that a new car is dearer than a used one is hardly news is it?
Interesting the way a supposed impartial new provider manages to word these things isn't it?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
suspect this will have severe implications on the 'nearly new' market, as people can buy new cars for less now??0
