Car Scrapage Scheme "Unpopular"

Never!!!! The government should have consulted us on here!
People are even deciding not to scrap their car, but still buy new as they can get better deals and save themselves money and keep their old car by buying online etc. Hate to boast, but thats exactly what I stated in another thread
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8041228.stm
Another complete flop....just as most of us on here said it would be.
Looks like people want more. Rather concerns me though how the nation, or the people interviewed on the BBC just seem to "expect" free money.

Not surprising, and I doubt if the Government will care either - this was always more of a political sop than a practical scheme. The economics of the UK car market differ vastly from Germany. It was never going to be worthwhile, in fact it seemed engineered not to be - how many owners of 10 year old cars can afford a new one, even with the discount?0
-
So the discount was off book price and not the actual price paid at the showroom? Then the scheme was designed never to work, because nobody has ever paid book price. Pointless waste of time.0

I collected my car yesterday and i got just a touch under 5000 pounds of the list price, we had a ten year old car, when i asked about it the y said it would only be 2000 pound off the list price, some people will go for it, but if i was you i would try and get your own deal.I am not a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as not being a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. As the owner of a 10+ year old car I would have been very pleased if the government scheme allowed us to buy a newer and greener car up to 2 years old (as was originally mooted in the press before the scheme was announced). Even if I could afford a brand new car, I hate the idea that as soon as it is driven out of the showroom it has decreased in value! I'd much rather be able to trade in for a 'nearly new' car.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Wow! Sounds like a great deal. What car was this, how much did it cost and how did you manage to negotiate such a good deal?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

I'd never buy a brand new car - absolute waste of time and money. :rolleyes:0

the car was 22000 pound honda crv i used a online broker, these cars are made in swindon, so by me buying one of these hopefully i have helped some uk workers keep their jobs.
The other thing is the spec of car i wanted are available secnd hand, but after my discount i have just paid over 1500 to have a new one.
Infact the cheapest one on autotrader same spec as ours is up for 15995 and thats got 37000 miles on the clock, ours had 14 miles on te clock, we are the first owners and we have got the full 3 year warranty.
Its just finding the right deals.
Take a look here why buy second hand when you can get new?? Just because in the past new cars were so expensive now its a byers market.

stupid idea. Reality is that there are already better deals from on-line brokers.0

I agree. Mostly, I think buying nearly new and keeping it til the wheels fall off is the best solution. It's amazing how long cars can last, we've kept ours for ten to fifteen years, without problems, in the past.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I was looking at brand new Mondeos a while back, and £5-£6K discounts were standard on the top end models bought from online brokers like uk-car-discount.co.uk. This was in 2007, before the financial trouble hit.0
