Competitors with the same active ingredient are chlorohex by colgate or Curasept

Does anyone know of where to get Curasept mouthwash at a good price? I thought Boots might sell it but it appears not.

Google lists a few places, including the manufacturers own site.
Not sure what you would define as a good price. I don't sell it or use it so I don't have a reference. Much prefer tepes etc and stuff the mouthwash :-)

  • My hygienist told me that if there was any mouthwashes worth using she'd sell them by the bucketload.

But I am interested in hydrogen peroxide. How do you use this to whiten your teeth?

And would my 55p bottle of Daisy bleach do the same job? ;)

You don't. Anything strong enough to whiten teeth can also damage them and your gums. Ask your dentist.

Your hygienist is exactly right. Over 90% of mouthwash are classed as cosmetics because there is no evidence to say they do any good, indeed many are actively harmful.

Then ask her to try Ultradex mouthwash...unless she thinks no-one will buy it from her at £8 a bottle? Around 8 months ago i started wearing braces and both my dentist and orthodontist highly recommended i started using Ultradex mouthwash as they said it won't be easy to maintain a high level of oral hygiene during my orthodontic treatment. Ultradex doesn't have any taste (someone once said it tastes like toilet water:rotfl:) its main ingredient is some form of mild chlorine so kills all mouth bacteria and whitens your teeth without harming your teeth/gums. Give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised ;)

Ultradex is nothing more than retardex rebranded. There is some evidence to say it decreases the bacteria in the mouth, it certainly does not kill it all , it would be terribly bad for your oral health if it did. Most orthodontists are more concerned that a mouthwash contains fluoride as decay is the problem they ae most worried about. Some ultradex mouthwashes contain fluoride.

No mouthwash will whiten teeth, indeed there is evidence that this will stain teeth eg in this study all patients got staining http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23017003/

Its fine if you are recommended a specific mouthwash for a specific reason for a limited time by a dentist, hygienist etc but for most people not only are most over the counter mouthwashes clinically useless it actually interacts with toothpaste and stops it working properly.
  • I find Corsodyl very effective when gum inflamation/infection/pain is present - usually clears up within 7 days.
My hygienist told me off because of staining and recommended Curasept mouthwash which is not available on general sale, There are two versions so speak to your dentist first. It doesn't stain.

just found an interesting article that gives quite a few bits of useful info:
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11192348
-Using corsodyl unless directed by your dentist because of gum desease etc is a bad idea because a study seems to show that it can rise your blood pressure. It's not like an ordinary mouthwash
-Corsodyl daily is much more diluted (0.2 v. 0.06% of Chlorhexidine), so no good if you are supposed to use the original stronger version
-Boots and Superdrug do their own version with the same active ingredient! Boots' sells theirs at exactly the same price as C so not worth buying it. C however is now on a 3 for 2 offer, so it works out much cheaper (£2.43 per bottle).
    £2.49 @ S.
    http://www.superdrug.com/superdrug-chlorhexidine-mouthwash-300ml/invt/232054

Don't buy C at supermarkets, they charge silly prices (£4.50-4.80).

Please do not use corsodyl unless your dentist has said you should. Even then most will only prescribe it for a few days to deal with a specific problem. There is an increasing problem with both bacterial resistance and allergy to chlorhexidine the active ingredient as well as other health concerns. In any case mouthwash should not be used within an hour of brushing as it interacts with toothpaste.

In general adequate cleaning that causes gum problems and no mouthwash is a substitute for proper brushing and use of floss and or tepe brushes every day. Unless you've been told to use it don't buy any mouthwash even corsodyl /chlorhexidine mouthwash.
