Alternatives to Corsodyl??

I've been advised to use corsodyl mouthwash by my dentist as my gums were bleeding a litte. I bought some and used it for the first time this morning. Apart from the vile taste and burning tongue (which I could put up with) I have felt incredibly nauseous all day since using it (I followed the instructions and didn't swallow any!)

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this? I can't face using it again, and just wondered if there was an alternative that does the same job?

Hi, I am also using this for the same reason as you and I find it awful stuff, I have the original flavour, it actually makes my gums hurt and since I have been using it I can barely taste anything and cant face eating, if I needed to loose weight this would be a great aid! I'm sorry I cant help but just thought I would let you know your not on your own and I too would be interested in alternatives:)
Thank you for this site Martin

Hi, thanks glowgirl, it really is vile! I put off using it for ages because I was worried about it staining my teeth, but I now realise that's the least of my worries!

When I used it this morning (original flavour), I didn't think it tasted too bad, but as the day has gone on, I've been left with a disgusting taste in my mouth which I just can't get rid of - I think that is what's making me feel sick _pale_ I daren't use it again, I don't want to feel ill all weekend.

I would speak to your dentist about this.

The 'alternative' will depend on why it's needed in the first place.

Gums bleeding 'a little' is not really a good indication for subjecting someone to Corsodyl, so I would check just why he feels it should be used.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Have just read your second post - and that suggests something more is going on.

  • I have used this in the past though I then used a normal mouth wash after it I know it sounds mad but it worked!

I find Oraldene much better than Corsodyl if I have an oral infection. The icemint flavour rather than the original, there is a huge difference in flavour.

When I was prescribed this the dentist told me "don't get the original it's vile, get the mint version."

Thanks Toothsmith. Can I ask what you mean? Is it not normal for this stuff to leave a nasty taste (a "clinical" taste is how I would describe it).

The dentist recomended me to use it because when she pricked my gum it bled, she didn't mention there was any more to it.
