Cardiff wont let any walk ins get treatment with students other than occasional emergency extractions. You have to be suitable for student care and are thoroughly assessed by the consultants. In addition there is no rushing things through. It used to take me the best part of 3 months to make a simple denture. The same one can be gotten out in a fraction of that time in practice .... so if you have no time constraints fine but there will be no hurrying things along for you if you need them to for whatever reason. If it was that easy to get treatment in dental hospitals everyone would be doing it ... and students would not be scrabbling around for patients to treat as they are now!

Thanks LCorkell, I will try Guys & St Thomas's. I recently went to the Eastmans Dental Hospital attached to UCL for a wisdom tooth extraction (they were recommended by my dentist) and it was OK but not great. So if I need anything else done I will try Guys.

the eastman is actually a very well regarded post grad teaching hospital. I wouldnt judge your experience too harshly as it may have just been you had a difficult tooth. If it was a choice between a bunch of students at guys and highly motivated post grads doing higher degrees I know where I woudl be heading!!!
  • The active ingredient in Corsodyl is very powerful, I've read several medical studies on it vs other mouthwashes and it kills a lot more bacteria then most things. What comes close is clove oil.

Mint Corsodyl tastes better then original for sure. But they both stain your teeth really badly. Although this comes off with scraping. I bought my own dentist style scrapers online and clean my own teeth.

One thing to look up online is called "Oil Pulling" it's something that's been used in India for centuries, you basically swish oil such as various vegetable oils back and forth each day until it turns white and then spit it out. It saved my aunt from loosing all her teeth at age 40 from diabetes.

Even within the whacky world of Woo-woo therapy, oil pulling is considered a bit dubious!

Wooshing a mouthful of Flora round your mouth will do absolutely nothing of benefit!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    I am not so sure.
Whilst it sounds like something I wouldn't be prepared to try there have been some studies showing some potential benefits.

from the Indian Journal of Dental research.

Although I would note that they show no statistical difference between oil pulling and Chlorhexidine.
I suspect the use of Chlorhexidine to be faster and a damn sight more pleasant (taste and staining notwithstanding)

I had terribly bleeding gums after I stopped smoking!! I used Corsodyl for a while and didn't do much!! The ONLY thing which stopped my bleeding gums was to dental floss every day!! Now have no more bleeding!! I would say if you have an area of infection, get a cotton bud and dip it in the Corsodol and apply to area, then its only that area that will stain and not all the teeth!! I personally, cos i have an underlying problem is that I use Peroxyl!! Keeps teeth nice and white too!! :D
I cant use corsodyl as it stained my previously unstained teeth terribly-i thought it was the herbal tea that i had been drinking! The hygienist had to use airflow to bring my teeth back to their usual colour. I would be very hesitant to ever use it again, but i was wondering what is peroxyl?

Hydrogen peroxide. However unless your hygienist/dentist has recommended it no one needs mouthwash. Most have no proven clinical benefit. Just make sure you floss daily or use tepe brushes.

    Hi,
I have started using corsodyl after the dentist said i had gum disease, i can put up with the taste and the slightly numb tongue but after a couple of days of using it i constantly have a nasty taste in my mouth which i have had for the last few days, the nearest i can describe it is to a burnt taste,i taste everthing as normal but am constantly sipping fruit drinks to get some temporary relief from the taste, i dont want to stop taking it as it has helped but dont think i can put up with the awfull taste in my mouth for much longer, has anyone else experienced this,

Corsodyl is only meant as a short term adjunct to cleaning . It is not meant to be used long term and should be used as directed by your dentist.. It is more important longterm to use floss/tepe brushes and toothbrush effectively and if you smoke stop. You should ask your hygienist/dentist for advice on best size of tepe brushes and how to use them.

Sipping fruit drinks will ruin your teeth it's a recepie for decay. Once you stop your short term use of corsodyl the taste will go.
