Alternatives to Corsodyl??

Hi there
I "saved" money by hardly ever going to the dentist and hygenist for years then, a few years ago, started suffering really bad pain. I saw an NHS dentist who pulled out a perfectly healthy tooth that came out way too easily.
I was referred to a periodontist (the NHS don't pay for these amazing folks) and ended up having root planing (scale and polish under the gum line) that cost nearly £900 and involved just under 30 injections over 4 hours in the chair. After that I had to have a dental implant costing over £2500 where the healthy tooth was removed from so that the jaw bone wouldn't receed any further. I was 34 at the time
Basically I had severe gum disease that has eaten away nearly two thirds of my jaw bone in places. I hadn't felt a thing as I was a smoker at the time (quit straight after my first appointment with the periodontist) because smoking narrows the blood vessels so you're nerve endings deaden. The bad breath and funny taste in my mouth I put down to my filthy habit.
My remaining teeth move around in my mouth and my gums have receeded (they don't grow back no matter what anyone tells you!) so I tend to cover my mouth when I smile. However, I do now have a very healthy teeth and gums and have learned a very hard lesson - never scrimp when it comes to your health. Ever. It just isn't worth it. I could have lost all my teeth, increased my risk of heart disease or even septicemia.
May I ask the dental experts on here if they recommend the corsodyl gum and tooth paste? My periodontist recommends colgate total but if the corsodyl works just as well and reduces sensitivity I'm happy to put up with the taste I've heard about!
Thanks!0 -
colgate total has a special formulation that is specific to them which keeps their active ingredients in place for longer. Research backs it up.
Corsodyl paste doesnt have these ingredients but is pretty new so I am not aware of any specific research done on it other than the study my wife took part in (she is an hygienist) but it was more on the consumer side of the product rather than the science0 -
I wish I'd been a bit smarter and read the forums before I squandered £3+ on a tube of this toothpaste. I have never in my life tasted anything so awful - not only does it taste nasty, is it dung brown and it is incredibly salty - it's like cleaning your teeth with Marmite. Whoever said it would be a great diet aid was right - it puts you off food for hours!!0

omg I love corsodyl!!! its like a miracle in a bottle!!!lol...I don't use it all the time but when I had my brace removed..my teeth were so sensitive I wanted to knock them out and my gums were red and swollen..I swear 5 or 6 days later with that stuff and they were all normal...dentist checked and all good... they were still sore as anything at the time but looked 100% much better!!!
and there was NO staining..:)
I've used it on and off for years!!!..always the original one, it tastes ok! xYou may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -

I seem to be allergic to any mouthwash other than corsydol (can't use a lot of toothpastes either).
It's a bit of a pest - i get ulcers or worse -tongue infections - nice!!! Does anyone know what the difference is between corsydol and other mouthwashes that make me able to use this okay?

^^ Corsodyl doesn't contain SLS, I think. That might be why.
I actually quite like the taste of the mouthwash. I used it after having my braces out, the full month long course. I'm considering starting to use the daily mouthwash now, already use the toothpaste, and I agree about the taste but you get used to it. I'm thinking if I spend the money now it might save me in the long run on the hygienist.
I only pay somewhere between £10 and £13 (it changes each time and is always a silly amount like £11.83) and this is with an NHS dentist. I'm in Scotland so that may be why. I go to see her every three months, which is just a pain in the backside really.0 -

yup scottish system is basically the same as was used across whole of UK before the Stupid new contract was imposed on England and wales.
You pay per item of service, ie examination, scale, filling etc.
The fees get uprated by a percentage every so often, which leads to the odd amounts as there is never any rounding off done0 -
The original is indeed horrible; use the mint one as suggested in other posts. They have just launched Corsodyl Daily Gum and Tooth Paste which may help as you cannot use toothpaste and the Corsodyl mouthwash within 15 minutes of each other as the ordinary toothpaste neutralises the effect of the mouthwash. If you haven't been to a dental hygienist, I suggest you do that first. I have found that dental hygienists are generally better than dentists at dealing with gum disease. Apparently, 50% of the population are susceptible to gum disease, so if you're in the wrong 50%, time to find a good dental hygienist. I had gum disease on and off for years but once into my fifties it got far worse. I have since lost a significant number of teeth. I don't like chewy food anyway but would like to have retained my choppers.
Be warned!!
