I take it BG tier 1 are the more expensive primary units? Seems a little disingenuous not to cut this rate too.

This is the energy industry, jimexbox. ;) Isn't BGs strategy the exact opposite of Eon's here?

    Looks like it.

Why trumpet an apparent 10% cut, then refuse to cut their primary rate? Is there no honesty in the energy industry. Whats sad is that our media just swallow a press release without actually examining the details.

Updated prices for Standard Electricity (there's no pdf for Websaver 3):

Updated prices for old products inc Click Energy 1-6 and Websaver 1-2:

As for Tier 1, yes it's the first units each quarter that you use (typically 125 kWh units) for which you pay more. So depending on the tariff and your usage, you might use so little electricity that you'll get a saving of pennies. Perhaps BG thinks everyone uses lots of electricity.

Fixed Price 2012 You will not be affected by any price changes until 31st January 2012- even if energy prices have to go up again*.

Love this bit! No mention of also no change if prices go down..

Maybe Im cynical, but when does a 10% electricity price cut exclude primary units?

Well done BG, your now up there with Eon as a supplier who uses 'confusion price cuts' to win a headline while not delivering.

Britist Gas remain by far the most expensive in my area, even with the 10% cut. I am on BG in my rented flat (not much I can do about that) so I might see the benefits but in my owned house they're so much more expensive than all the other electricity companies. Apologies this isn't quite on topic but 'Lowest prices in Britain' is a little out there! (I know this is an average over the whole country)

How do you arrive at that conclusion?

What figures do you use? What BG tariff?

I really would be surprised if you can give any figures to support that statement.

I am quite sad and have an electricity and gas spreadsheet which compares each supplier. I am just about to move house and when I started had no idea how to compare but I've got it sussed now and can just plug in the numbers.

You have to bear in mind I am comparing the very cheapest tariffs to one another. I think BG statement reads 'cheapest STANDARD' prices in the UK. Still even on their cheapest tariff the figures read as follows:

    Tier 1 - 22.461p/kwh
    Teir 2 - 10.509p/kwh

    Cheapest supplier (in my area)
    Tier 1 - 15.614p/kwh
    Tier 2 - 8.642p/kwh

On top of that you can take into consideration the discount for monthly DD and duel fuel if you have it but BG still far more expensive. (For my consumption, almost £30 per quarter more expensive). Oh, I even took into account that BG drop to Tier 2 after 125 units whereas other suppliers don't drop onto Tier 2 after 225 units.

Happy for comments on this because as I said I don't actually know very much about electricity or gas but it just happened that I had a text from BG stating their new prices but it still didn't make a difference.

I am quite open to the fact that I may have done my sums wrong ... but hope I am right! :)

Apologies I quoted their old prices.

    New prices:

    Tier 1 - 21.672p/kwh
    Tier 2 - 9.371p/kwh

    Is this 10% less?

Annoying when people make such a statement without any supporting figures, isn't it? :p
