Advent Calendar

I was lucky enough to spend some of my childhood in Germany, about 40 years ago. Christmas there is magical, go to the Christmas markets if you get the chance and you will know what I mean. You could get the most wonderful chocolate advent calenders then, on Christmas Eve when you had the last chocolate you could open it out and the idea was to stand a candle behind it so the pictures shone through! Probably was a bad fire hazard now I come to think of it!!
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

When our kids were small, my mum bought them advent calendars that were supposed to be large candles, made of card, with 24 boxes inside. Every year she fills the boxes with sweets & tiny gifts. Our daughter is now 22 and now has her own baby daughter, so I think this year her box will be filled for her daughter instead!
Sometimes mum has put in games, with one piece of the game appearing each day. None of the presents are every very expensive, but its great fun finding something new each day.0 -
Chipps - you've given me an idea.
We have one (for the whole family) advent calendar which is a string with 24 little Christmas stockings.
I'm going to make a jigsaw puzzle from a family photo of last christmas and cut it into 24 pieces and on the last day the picture will be complete! I suppose I'd better put a few sweets in to keep everybody happy as this will be unexpected. ::)
i'm thinking, it would be good to do this every year so we can remember what last year's Christmas was like (start a new family tradition).
Actually last year's in our house wasn't brilliant but I do have a nice photo. I may be full of enthusiam and getting just a bit carried away ;D ;D- we'll see how it goes down.0 -

You've got me thinking now and it hurts

Remember how you used to make a set of drawers out of matchboxes?
Make 24 of them and glue them together in a stack and decorate to resemble an Advent candle. Each draw can then be dated and contain a treat. I suppose you could stick them together in any configuratuion to make what you want.
When we were small and mum/dad didn't have much cash for Christmas deccys we giftwrapped loads of Capstan Senior Service Packets and hung them on the tree instead of baubles. (feel free to hum suitable Oliver Twist tunes at this point ;D)Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -

thats a great idea math, and you could use them things with a knob and a pointy bit made from metal as handles. that sounds terrible, but i'm sure someone knows what i mean. :-[ ;D0 -
