For those who want to try, some 0800 number also have an international number which is actually a normal landline, that you can call from the UK. Very handy when it involves bank and you want to cautious.

For example, HSBCs have the international telephone banking number +44 1226 261 010. You can also call that from the UK as well, and when calling them from my mobile I also use this number.

One thing though, I am glad for this trick, as I generally get bills from Vodafone approaching 100 pounds a month (that includes my internet though).

1899 (and 18185 etc) DO NOT connect to free numbers, only 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, etc.

So if i want to call international lets say Canada then dialling 1899 allows me to make free calls without ANY charge from my o2 contract phone is that correct?

Call my cynical, but the reason why they publicise it as the "international" number is to get people to ring the 0845/0870 so that the bank gets a cut of the profit, and the customer gets 'stung' getting a nice large mobile bill at the end of the month.

It's worth pointing out as the mobile co's find out these access numbers they remove them from being contactable. Orange was notorious for killing internationa dial through numbers as soon as they found out about them.
  • I have tried to dial loads of numbers using this service & none of them will connect, its rubbish.
  • I used the number suggested. Orange allowed the call to that number from the standard minutes and then charged for the calling card number dialled using this facility.

ORANGE MOBILE USERS BEWARE, YOU CAN INCUR A HEFTY BILL BY USING THIS NUMBER.

Any alternatives that prevent being ripped off for using 0800 numbers on Orange will be much appreciated.

So why not complain to the watchdog? They cannot charge you for what your contact lets you access.

0870,0845 etc are 0.35p+ a minute on some networks.

Please do not put "0.35p" if you mean "£0.35". One is 100 times the cost of the other.
