My situation maybe different.... I'm a Ltd Co. so my business can be asked to provide reciepts. I've kept everything or a copy of everything if I've had to send receipts off for my payment.

It's no different to being self employed - everyone must keep receipts, which is why I get so annoyed at MSing companies when they want you to send them your original receipt!

    thanks Timmne,

    1) I did not take it back for 2 reasons. the MS company did not check the assignment report within the forst 10 days and then i wasnt around. so coudl not return it.
    2) I did ask if i could do the assignment without an actual purchase as the products were very expensive. and they said to make it a valid visit a purchase was necessary.

Here's a scenario - I've accepted and undertaken a job 360 miles from home 720 miles round trip - I set out from my home address to carry this assignment out, (plus had a night's stay), then returned.

I do high business miles for my main work and I'm over the first 10k, so applying 10p/mile tax deduction (rather than 20p for the first 10k) ...£72 tax relief....

Despite the fact I used £50 of diesel, 16 hours travelling, for a £5 fee..... Not too sure how mr taxman is going to see this one.

Why didnt you buy the product, photograph the reciept, then retun the item there-and-then?

Just a hunch but am I right in assuming the top's in your size, your choice of colour and style in a designer you like? Unless you bought something totally inappropriate, this is not tax deductible, whether the option to return it is there or not.

With the tax man, people think things are okay to claim because they get away with it year on year. However, I have seen first hand (an ex client!) what happens when the tax man starts asking questions and in your case SW, he may ask in six years' time, at which point, a lot of interest and tax will be payable as he will never agree to it!

    Still, your choice ;)

For the Abai jobs, they say that you must do it as part of your normal shopping. So by accepting the job, you are automatically saying that you would have bought this item anyhow, and therefore it is not a taxable expense.

I do the posh department stores now and then, but only for departments that I would shop in, e.g. cosmetics, food, books. If you don't want the item that you have bought, then I would try to take it back, the customer service in there is usually quite good I think.
