wish i got paid twice i month, i always laugh with our payroll department and say i wouldn't say no to getting two paydays in one month.
  • I thought I'd let you all know that (drum roll please)

the pesky joint account came out of the red yesterday, by £330, for the first time since 5th June 2003! I don't expect it to stay in credit for long, just a couple of days, but it feels absolutely fantastic - and somehting to build on!

The overdraft limit was £3,900, now £1,950, and ideally I'd like to reduce that to sub £1K at the end of the month.

    Hooray!!

  • to Brian at E-on - who has smoothed the way to my refund for the money that was owed after we changed companies. We have received a cheque for the money owed, and all is well.

    Thanks Brian!

There is no other money news at the moment, I'm working silly hours with both jobs so haven't felt inclined to do much in the mystery shop direction.

Just want to 201.gif now, but will make a spacial mse effort and attempt to:

get in the washing before it gets damp and needs to be aired
make a banana cake in the BM to use up manky bananas
    wrap up DS's birthday pressie

I was delivering training today so had enormous lunch at the venue and don't need to eat, so that's cheap and easy!

    Have a good evening

  • All is mellow here today, after 3 days of feeling zonked the whole time I woke up this morning with a little more zing, which is great.
I've checked the banks, all looks ok there, and done the scratchies. Housework-wise I've got the washing on the line and done a shopping list. Yesterday I had a very quick hoover through and cleaned our bathroom so things are just about bearable.
I'm working late tonight, so just about to start, and will come back via a supermarket so that will be food shopping done, hooray - although some things we still have quite a lot of - this empty nest business is weird.

Hope you all have a good day

  • DD phoned last night, and she wants to come home for a few days around her birthday, which is nice. Things don't sound like they are any better financially, although she has lost the use of her phone as she owes some money, and has realised that she can live without it - hooray!!! So she is contemplating a PAYG version when the contract runs out in December.
It sounds like her job is a bit precarious at the moment, and her landlady's ex-flatmate is sleeping on the sofa as she has fallen out with her fella, which makes her think the landlady will want her to go so she can have the ex-flatmate, who is also a friend, back.
No wonder she's a bit fed-up, poor lass.
It is so hard listening to it without offering to bail her out, but that doesn't seem to do any good at all. sigh.
One of the things she'd like to do when she comes home is go to the beach, and I've agreed we'll go one evening - I don't think she's realised that it will be dark and cold at the end of November before we even get home from work, let alone by the time we drive an hour.

  • CBM, I know its hard to say no and not bail people out. My friend never listens to me regarding money, she asks then totally ignores what I have said to help sort situations. You just have to sit back (as much as its hard, specially since its your daughter) and wait for them to realise how to fix their problems by themselves.
  • How right you are Claire. These forums seem full of people who know folk that are not doing vry well financially, which is really painful to watch.

DD also had some ideas of things she'd like for her b'day, such as coat - £75, hair straighteners, camping equipment, surfing lesson; hundreds of pounds worth. I'm not sure she expected it all from us or was hoping that I might find some aunts/uncles to buy for her. I'm finding it tough with a grown-up daughter, especially one that is struggling, to try and work out how much to spend. I certainly wasn't thinking of hundreds though. It seems a bit obscene to spend £75 on a coat - but then if you saw my wardrobe you'd wonder if I had spent £75 over the last year on clothes (answer - I haven't!!!)

    Cheers all

  • Hi CBM

I thought I'd pop over to your diary (now that I've found it!

I wondered how old your daughter was? Mine's 18 and although she says everything is fine I worry about her constantly. Although she's at college she has a part time job but spends money like there's no tomorrow - bit like I used to be I suppose.

The coat would keep your daughter warm and it would be like a big hug everyday.

Sounds like your wardrobe is like mine - infact mine looks like it shouls belong to an undertaker - all old and mostly black!

Keep going you're doing so well especially with the bank account. I haven't touched my overdraft yet concentrating on the cards at the moment.

  • Hi all
Things are a bit sad at the CB household this evening.
We went to a training do today connected with the voluntary work we do. All was well until lunch. I went through and the tables were set for a ploughmans, so I asked if there was a veggie one prepared. There wasn't, so I would have been quite happy to self-serve from the bits and pieces on the table but was told - instructed - by some woman to take a prepared plate and remove the bits I didn't want.
    Talk about a conflict!
Remove the ham and eat the rest would mean of course no waste, far better for the environment, and no conflict/confrontation in front of the big group of people. And I'm vegetarian by choice, not allergies. And we were all volunteers. And it was a free lunch.
However, the ham was all over the place, and I don't eat meat and just couldn't bring myself to do it; so I opted out and went for a walk over lunchtime. There was no conflict; I just couldn't do it.
Everyone assumed I'd gone off in a huff.
So now I'm feeling really unhappy, I hate food waste, I hate scenes, I hate people talking about me, I feel unjustly labelled as a militant fussy eater.

Also a bit sorry for myself, as you can tell.
    Sorry for the rant...

    Hi PBH
Welcome to the CBM diary, nice to hear from you.
My daughter is slightly older than yours, similar spending patterns though it seems.
I'm quite pleased about the bank account. It has been really tough to tackle though, as that is the account our spending goes from.
I tackled cards first too, according to the interest rates - when it got to the 0% card it made better sense to switch to pouring money into the overdraft.
    Cheers
