Just remember that sniper tools won't do much good if someone sets their maximum bid at £25, and you're going to snipe at £20.
You really have to set your absolute maximum amount if you're using a sniper, and hope no-one wants it more.

I have used this one & found it to be excellent. As the op says you do not have to give your password to anyone.

    Would Recommend!

The only problem with these ones are when the bid is going in your connection goes down or goes slow. Can be very annoying.

For would be snipers have a look at esteal.com. Currently free but very good.
  • forget all those other snipers this one is free, has no limits on the number of snipes, contains no adaware or spyware and will update forever. you set the snipe interval to suit your connection speed (i use 5 seconds on an 8 meg connection) just leave your pc on and minimise it and it does the rest.

It also has a virus, according to my AVG scan. BEWARE!

I tried goofbay and it was a disaster. Worked ok for a week or two, but then started missing all the auctions that I placed snipes for - tried to place the bids after the auctions had finished. Anyway, I would not recommend them at all.

I've used esnipe.com on the whole - and never had any problems. It's $1 for any auction win that is not in US$.

That's weird, I've been using Goofbay for ages and have never had a problem.
  • I have chosen Snippy's (www.snippys.net) as auction sniper.
It works well, with a user friendly interface, on every ebay sites, and on every Delcampe sites. It is cheap, and you pay only if you win.
I have read on their homepage you may have a free trial - up to 5 free snipes.

I've made an attempt at collating the comments of this thread so far, and they are (in no particular order, but hopefully correct!):...

Here's two more for the list:

hidbid.com 5 free snipes per week, free to join

bidball.com 6 free trial winning snipes, bought in packages thereafter, but supposed to be changing to free weekly snipes

    Quick question:

if 2 people 'snipe' head to head on an item - what would happen?

I suppose that the person who had the largest max. bid would win - but would one bit of software outperform the other???

"the person who had the largest max. bid would win -" unless the 2 scheduled bids were for the exact same amount, or there was not enough difference between them to meet the minimum bid increment for the auction. In those two cases, the first bid in wins.

So if your program bids 8 seconds before the auction ends and a rival bidders program bids 3 seconds before the auction ends, your snipe will either fail or you'll end up paying more for the item because another bid will have got in after your first snipe that you'll have to beat.

The highest bid wins, regardless of when it was placed - except for the occasions mentioned above.

In addition, Gixen is the only one to offer fault-tolerance (double sniping) for only 6$ a year.

Any decent sniper service should have at least one backup or "mirror" server. I believe some have more than that.

so which one of these snipe sites would you rate as being most secure?

i would like to try one out but like HLK I would like to go with the most trusted site as they are getting access to my account.

A sniping service should be using SSL encryption on their site when dealing with any sensitive information. Any that do not should probably not be used.

Why do people need this service... apart from being away from the computer.

To hopefully save some money by keeping your bidding intentions hidden and not drawing unwanted attention to the item. Early and more bids equals more attention which normally equals more bids.

I always put a bid in at about 1minute 20 to test if other people have placed a max bid offer. Once I am above that I just place a bid when there are 5 seconds left - but not a max bid...

The 1minute 20 to test is probably costing you money because of the late bidding "nibblers" (manual snipers, whatever). Still, regardless of when, you might as well just decide on your absolute maximum bid and place it. If you win, good. If you lose, the winner paid too much as far as you're concerned.

Just remember that sniper tools won't do much good if someone sets their maximum bid at £25, and you're going to snipe at £20.

    Exactly.

Sniping is beneficial for all bidders really, even the early bidders (unless there are more than one early bidder on an item, then the bids add up drawing more attention).

Experienced manual bidders (I don't know why an experienced bidder would be doing it manually however, unless maybe it is an irreplaceable item) should expect late bids. This should force them to decide on the absolute maximum, and place their bid, period - end of story. They win or lose, no second guessing.

Automated sniping saves you time and hopefully money.

Something else - if you schedule a snipe and change your mind, you can cancel it without having to file a bid retraction on eBay. This comes in handy if you're known to get excited when you see something you want to buy without really thinking about it.

If you have a bid retraction, you can be blocked from bidding by sellers on future auctions, so it's not the best thing to do.

There are more benefits to sniping that have pretty much been covered by already.

And what if the site is going to nick your details and have a very easy hack into your account? The data must be stored somewhere....
    As above ;)
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

Obviously, it would be a good idea to at least do a search on Google for the name of the sniping service or software that you want to use before using it. If it is a scam, there will almost assuredly be some horror stories or negative reviews about it that show up from your search.

Any sniping software or service that has been around for any length of time would have surely been "outed" if they were stealing eBay login information and hijacking accounts.

I'm not sure what the "As above" part is about.
