mexico holidays

  • I'm in the opposite tack - we are flying with Thomson at end of May to Cancun (all going well). I just looked online and the price has dropped online considerably, though they are still selling the same holiday.

I'm furious at the decrease in price as it is now £289pp less than we paid  That's nearly £600 between us and Thomson/our Travel Agent won't refund the difference or even meet us half way.

(I know this is normal, but i'm still angry about it :rotfl:)

We leave for Cancun on 29th May, the FCO have not changed their website advising people it's ok to travel, but our tour operator First Choice, will not amend our destination unless we pay them an extra £100.00 and if we do pay that we cant amend the time we travel to later in the year we still have to travel before or on the date we were originally meant to fly out. I have been advised by First Choice rep from the shop where i booked they are very sorry but after the meeting the tour operators had via conference call today they will be allowing flights to resume as normal as from 12th May, so our holiday will go ahead as normal any changes made will be liable for charges back to ourselves...am gutted, we spent over £2,000 on that dream holidays to find out they are now selling them to fill planes and hotels at a fraction of cost ( I know that's usual practice but it's obvious that lots of people who have paid extra to transfer to another destination will now have their seats needing filled ) I feel that we have been short changed big style and the holiday will not be as appealing ..we have spoken to a few people who have travelled back from there who said resort staff were wearing masks, and of course some of the attractions we were due to visit have been affected. we have travel insurance but would prefer the tour operator to either offer a full refund or transfer to another holiday of same value free ... we even offered to stay with tour company but move holiday to later in the year but they have refused. Any more suggestions as to where we go from here it's got my partner and I so frustrated we dont even want to go at all

What you have to remember it could easily have gone the other way and if so would you be happy paying a extra £600.00

Its all supply and demand and you happy with the price when you booked it and its very silly to be checking the prices all the time if it is a nonrefundable price as you are winding yourself up for something you cannot change.
  • I know that thats why I said what I did in brackets..

I didn't check to check prices - I checked to see if they were actually still selling the holiday, ergo if it was likely my flight would go..

Well, so far my holiday is still going ahead. We plan to travel on 9th June through Thomas Cook. As of yet, the swine flu doesn't bother me, what does is the fact that TC (confirmed by our rep) is apparently the last tour operator to act upon warnings from FCO. We have friends travelling several weeks after us and they are being told that they are able to change, our rep has said it will probably happen to us, but they take longer to decide.......makes no sense to me!

Anyhoo, this basically means for us anyway, that everyone is changing their hols, so if ours is cancelled we are going to be left with a pants holiday:mad:

Oh, I seem to have gone off on one. I came on to ask advice haha. A friend emailed me this link, and asked me to take a look at section 13. Correct me if I am wrong, but is it saying that if my hol gets cancelled that I could choose a more expensive one and the tour operator will have to cough up? It's all in lawyer talk, can't bloomin undersatnd it. Would be grateful for any advice

we booked with thomas cook , have seen alternative holiday on their website for a couple of hundred extra , which we are quite happy to pay but when we went in the shop they want to charge us another £1800.oo . this doesnt seem very fair but they wont budge .

Have you tried printing the online holiday out and taking it in to them?

We did this when booking our honeymoon a few years ago (nothing to do with mexico though) and after consulting with the manager they agreed to match the online price for our holiday. Might be worth a try???

It doesn't say that at all I'm afraid! Nothing of the sort! It says if you take a cheaper holiday you are entitled to a refund.

We are due to go to Mexico on 16 June. Have been trying to amend booking and go to Cuba. Prices have been rising since last week. We are now having to pay an extra £100 for the holiday plus £100 amendment fee plus new flights from Northern Ireland making a total of about £350 for a lower starred hotel, which is actually showing as £200 less on the internet. Have been trying yesterday and today - in total 3 hours, being passed from pillar to post. I now have eight different phone numbers. Thomson won't amend holiday as we booked with Portland. Portland won't speak to me as my husband is the lead person even though I booked the holiday. All the while the prices keep rising. One hotel in Jamaica which we looked at has risen by £400 since last week. Think we should all contact ABTA and Holiday Watchdog. This practice could not be legal.

I know it sucks big time, but it's all down to supply and demand. The hotel have the right to charge their Rac rate and beyond if the demand is there instead of the usual reduced rate that they probably charge the major tour operators.
I wish there was a better way for all of you to have the kind of holiday you have saved for and expect.
