Just one more thing...am i being lazy? I haven't painted the back of it!
I am doing this to the island unit I am busy painting atm. I sanded the it using a flat sander at the weekend...sooooo muych easier than by hand...could have done with it for the 50's unit, just didn't think!! The back, which was bare wood and quite dirty, has come up very well. I treated all the knots/nails with knotting solution, then applied two coats of primer before getting the first coat of satinwood on this morning...looking good!!!
Mummy Jo - glad you found my ramblings useful. Sorry about the gloss being too shiny for you, it does tend to be. I don't use Crown paints, so looked at the range on-line and found their eggshell was oil-based. I tend to use Dulux paints, and Satinwood for woodwork...it is water based and much less shiny...IYKWIM. It isn't as tough as gloss, and I understood from your post that you wanted a tough paint finish.
I use the water-based paints as I an asthmatic and the oil-based ones really make my breathing much worse. The Satinwood is more difficult to get a texture-free finish though (ie brush/roller marks). If I wanted a gloss finish, I would have to wait for DH to paint it...and and I would have to wait for ever to get it done!!!
We have abandoned castors for my island unit, as I would need heavy-duty ones and at least two lockable ...they are soooooo expensive, so DH has cut wood (which he already had) to add to the top, which he will hopefully glue and screw onto the unit tonight (they have been primed and have one coat of satinwood already
). Then I will get another coat (or two!) of paint on in the next couple of days and get my unit back into the kitchen by the weekend :j I can't wait!!

Really lovely, em:)
Has anyone tried to do placemats? I recently bought cheapie ones in TKMaxx as I couldn't find ones I really liked and needed them NOW, but they have barely been waterproof and a couple have teastains, I was thinking of covering them in napkins or wallpaper and varnishing heavily, what do you think? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
Hi Emma, I had already spotted your tables update on your blog as I follow you on mine. I was working on mine and your post came up on the dashboard. I am getting hooked on the blog side of things and I really need to stop all this online stuff and get on and do my projects. My excuse at the moment is that it keeps raining and I cant get outside to paint and also I am away at the weekend so no point in starting.
I could see the link pictures to your flickr pages though. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow -- Mary Anne Radmacher0 -

Would these be any good for your island unit?

Can i ask your advice pleeeese ?
Today i've bought a small bureau [ for £20! ] with a drop down front, little cubby holes in the top , a drawer with lovely ornate drop handles and the bottom part has a shelf halfway down, the sliding glass doors have gone.
I think it's oak but covered in dark varnish, do i sand it back to bare wood before i paint it? [a cream, i think ] or can i just give it a quick rub with sandpaper?
I want to use it as a workstation for my laptop, in the space under the stairs, a la Harry Poterso i can use wicker baskets in the open shelves at the bottom for the 'stuff ' !!
Thanks all, you've inspired me to DO something with my 'hole' under the stairs :T
Caz
You could use ESP (easy surface primer) a lot easier than sanding and then paint over the top (instructions on can) Or sandpaper but you wont need to go right down to the wood.
Just painted a veneered darkwood bookcase and it's come up fine with ESP. (I think I need shares in that company :rotfl:
Your little hole under the stairs sounds a great use of space.
If you are going to be using the top as a computer station and it needs to be hardwearing, a lot of peeps have sanded that down to the bare wood and varnished or waxed it and then painted the rest. (if that makes sense)0 -
Thanks for looking seakay...how come I didn't find them!
