Pinkypunky: aww thats sweet does he still call you that?
Get a waterbased primer (the brushes wash out in water)
You need to sand the varnish off, or, cheat and use a liquid sandpaper
which is soooo easy. You just put on with a cloth and then clean of
with damp cloth. I use it for most of my projects, unless its got flaky
paint and then definately sandpaper.
I'm just Pinky now
Thanks for all the help - liquid sandpaper! That sounds amazing, regular sanding gets rather boring! I'm going off to the DIY shop as soon as I can! How exciting! Will report back! Thanks to all those who post competitions! :T

Lovely. Love that fabric0 -
This is my favourite, the inside even got painted bright red.
Hubs uses it to store paperwork
The yellowish band is supposed to be mock bamboo
Pennib your furniture is amazing. You should open a shop if you havent already. Can I ask if you have a picture of the inside too, I love the idea of painting it red inside and would love to see it.
I am so unlucky with my finds. Although I did win a lloyd loom type blanket box on ebay the other day. I have bought my paint and my fabric to make a new top but need advice. The top currently has a flat plastic type cover (the original I think) and I have bought the Marissa fabric from LA for it. I think that I should pad it out before putting the fabric on to make it look nicer but I am not sure what to use. Would wadding be the best thing and should I buy 2inch or 4 inch depth. Also I have only found it on ebay in large quantities. I think it is mostly used for quilting so any suggestions greatly received. I will post before and after pictures when it is finished. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons. Courage doesn't always roar. PinkyPunky; As your flat is cream you could either go with cream so it blends in, or, hows about painting a completly different colour.
OR.....cream on the inside and different colour on outside, decisions, decisions
Bibbity; A lovely haul of items there. Stop talking about car boots :rotfl:
Debbsi; that chair looks so comfy and that sideboard bargain, look forward to seeing it made over
Yes I did paint it meself.
Pennib - you are very clever!! I was hoping to resurect my a level art skills and have a go at doing something similar - I used to love painting flowers. What type of paint did you use for the detailed painting ie the birds etc0 -
Cherisong; No dont have a shop...that would stress me out!
I don't have a picture of the inside sorry, all the papers will
fall out as well its chocker block in there! Its the same red
that is under the creamy colour top coat. (just emulsion)
Have you tried buying some foam in a sofa place for the top
of your box? Or you can get wadding in a material place it's quite cheap and
get it by the meter and then you can put how many layers you're pleased with
to pad it out. OR for a no spend how's about using an old sleeping bag - minus the zip - this is what I used for padding on this stool which is the bottom of an old bureau.0 -
Debbsi; Go for it!!! I use acrylic paints and sometimes emulsion. The green dresser has some of the pattern done in the same green emulsion that I used for the body, so it matches up. Acrylic doesn't need varnish on really but as the body's of the furniture are done in a cheap emulsion it needs protecting, so I used a satin or matt varnish.0
