hi bibbitybob. I'm not too sure, I did think about it but it just looked so depressing, horrible inset handles u couldn't replace. we have put it to excellent use in the garage now, we even have a sewing drawer, a screws and nails drawer, all quite exciting. husband has agreed to go back to the furniture shop mentioned below to have another look.:A0

Hi cuddles123. I recently re-covered a footstool (pictures a fair few pages back, union jack design) When I looked up info on recovering it recommended NOT to strip off the old covering or foam unless it was damaged, just to cover straight over it. I followed this advice for my footstool and it was fine. I used a staple gun my mum found laying around (not the best but did the job) it was very easy really. That chair has no complex shapes to it and I think would be really easy to recover. Practice with some spare material or cheap calico first if you're unsure.
Good Luck
Thanks Newnee, but the upholstery foam is breaking down and dust coming out of the bottom of the chair, so I think it will have to come off. The chair is at my Mums at the mo, and she has put masking tape on the bottom to try and stop the dust.
I would tackle it, but think it needs tapered edges, which I'm not sure about doing.Jack of all trades ... Master of none

golly you guys have been busy chatting whilst I aaagh have been sat all evening trying to get my sewing machine going - aagh - I am absolutely carp at sewing - can cross stitch no probs but sew aagh - really struggle to sew a button but years and years ago I bought an old jones sewing machine and have tried several times over the years to teach myself = and failed - although last time I did at least manage to sew a couple of cushion covers not tooo bad. Anyway got some lovely gingham from laura ashley and some bias binding from dunhelm - well I pressed my bias binding in half so it was neat and then started to sew once I had cut a triangle of gingham out but every time I get going it doesnt work right - it feels like the thread is getting too tight and coming out and holes are going in the bias but only bits of thread before it just starts doing just holes again and the thread keeps coming out of the needle - I have been sat there since 8 pm - I am now stopping and having a sulk so thought I would come on here to see what you lovely lot have been up?
Hi
I normally just lurk and admire all your creative efforts but have experienced similar issues with sewing machines so thought I'd offer my tuppence worth.
I would check the bobbin case and mechanism first. Give it a good clean with soft brush to make sure there aren't any bits of thread or dust trapped in the mechanism. Then check your tension and try sewing on a scrap of material. Usually is due to incorrect tension or trapped dust or debris in the mechanism in my experience. Won't do any harm anyway.
Hope you manage to sort it out soon.

Where is St Phillips in Bristol? I live in Weston and would take a trip up there if I thought I could get a wood dresser for a reasonable price
I've looked in all of our charity shops and they are so very very expensive for any furniture items. It's a crying shame because people give to charity shops for a twold reason, helping the charity and the people who can't afford to buy new.
I shall try to find more info but can't open much on this computer (I'm at work).

Bibbitybob wrote: »jennieshrew - could the laminated one be painted? If it is a good shape/size, I would prime it with a melamine primer then paint as normal.
I was thinking the same. I have a couple of laminate type bookshelves that I would like to paint (too tight to get rid). Has anyone tried it?0 -

Come on Essex girls why aren't you bidding on those fireside chairs? I've only gone and bid on them and I'm winning! My OH will kill me if I win but I will be miffed if they go cheaper than the £25 I paid for the other tattier pair (unless one of us wins of course).0

Hi Kaz, this is the link to Emmaus. They have two stores in Bristol, the big one in St Phillips and a smaller shop in Bedminster. I actually got my dresser in the Bedminster one, it was £85. There was a small pine dresser in ST Phillips yesterday, cant remember how much but they are very reasonable.
