Our BHF furniture shop is extortionately priced too! They sell used appliances for more than you can buy new.

We've got 6 charity shops just in my local area. A couple of them can be a bit pricey with furniture, but the 'help the aged' shop where I got my table and chairs from, are very reasonable. I paid £39 for the set, 4 nice heavy chairs and a drop leaf table. Doesn't look much at the moment, but it's a nice sturdy set and should look nice once it's done-up :)

Well, hopefully it'll be 'done up' pretty soon, as I've just bought a sander off Amazon. Hope it arrives soon, because I can't wait to get stuck in :D

They also have in at the moment two Beko electric cookers, very basic ones that retail at £169 new for £175 second hand!!!

    What???

One of the lines my boyfriend sells professionally (market trader, more than one stall) is fully refurbished second hand cookers. I asked him what's about the best price he can get away with putting a £169 beko out at, he scowled at me and said "a hundred quid and why, what have you landed me in, you better not have bought one"- Priceless!

So the trade doesn't want to put 'em out at £100, and the charity shop is demanding £175... £6 over cost.

I've found Emmaus to be reasonably priced, but our BHF furniture shop is overpriced. I'm surprised they sell anything.

Been lurking for a long time, love to see all of your pictures.
Over-priced Charity shops... I agree with you wholeheartedly, how many times have you seen something that you could use if it was a bit cheaper? I was wondering if they are open to offers? How about we all start bartering with them? If you dare :o.... you first:D

My sister does, with great result, but she's very ''imposing'' character and I think is easy for people to be swept away by her :). My mother tires and rarely gets anywhere but tries shamelessly,

I try less often, but did bargain down a large set of copper pans (Not all matching, but brought in by the same person....a mixture of saucepans, saute pans, a one person omlette pan and a fondue set). I can't remember how much by though! TBH, I was amazed they did. I don't think it would work round here on smaller purchases.

I agree with the comments about charity shops

I used to buy in them when I had no money for new clothes and they were reasonably priced - now many things can be dearer than new! I think they should remember that the stuff has been given free and with the hope that it can help someone else. They should learn the lesson many retailers have learnt that if you price things too high people will not buy but if they are reasonable people will buy twice as much. (does that make sense?)

charity shops are run the same way any other high street shop is
they are told what to price things at with a very small ballpark figure
    ie-a blouse, between say £3.50 - £4.50 etc
and they have weekly targets to achieve

what a lot of them dont take into account is shops like primark/asda/tesco clothing comes in with very expensive designer brands, but staff are under pressure to make set weekly amounts

they are also supposed to work on a 2 week rotation
and the label will have a code on it to reflect when it was put out
their year starts 1st april, and that is week 1, so its easy to work out what was put out and when
they do this for 2 reasons, so head office knows their floor is currently stocked and so staff know what to rag off after 2 weeks, they get money per tonne for anything that doesnt sell, and there has always been money in rags

the bigger named charity shops are competing with high street stores now, and its the smaller independant ones that seem to shine, their priority is making money for their worthwhile cause, big names are making money to fund head office and under pressure to do so

I was very happy with my purchases yesterday from my local charity shop. For £7 I got:
4 paperbacks one brand new never read for my husband, a brand new pair of women's shorts from Cotton Traders for me, two tops for me and finally a gorgeous little pair of girls dungarees from M&S which was only 50p. Husband delighted and the clothes are washed and on the line as we speak. I always freshen up any clothes I buy which are secondhand, and really enjoyed my trip out as hadn't been out in a while to town.
Do a little kindness every day.;)

our local charity shops all seem have lots of rubbish in. some times you can get fantastic bargains. like i got my 2 yr old a in the night garden dressing gown in excellent condition for 50p. he loves it. but some seem to be selling stuff alot dearer and it isn't worth it. i popped into one couple weeks back and it was selling brand new matalan homeware ( ie vases etc) all for £1. not sure why maybe old stock but i found a perfect green one to go in porch.
