I'm new to this thread and new to shabby chic! I'm getting a cherry wood table and chairs for free from a friend and would like to paint them. I understand that I'll need to sand them, primer them, undercoat and then eggshell on the top but I was wondering what to do with the actual table top and how to protect it? If it was pine then I'd leave it natural but since it's such a dark wood it needs painting. Would a clear gloss do the job? Thanks!0

very personally, if I were going to varnish I'd opt for a matt varnish. But I don't think people should worry too much if what they like isn't technically the style of shabby chic. To me part of shabby chic is the individual nature of what we like, and rejection of corporate style trend....while I do agree some of th beautiful things bought at big chains etc are wonderful and look the part and are great in our homes, very personally I'm going to try and minimise them in my home. I'd like to surround my stuff with stuff that not only do I find beautiful and useful but that has genuine memories, is ethical/green where possible and which I'll want to keep for a very lonhg time, making it cost effective, if not always cheap. I don't plan to be inflexible about it nor to chuck stuff I've already succumbed to and like from chains. Many years ago, as a student, I had a mismatched fine bone china table setting, for eight. I love it, but TBH, it grates slightly that now everyone does it and that what was fairly unique when I was 18 looks sort of cliched now.

I got mine in the post a few days ago and was just going to post about this. It is seriously drool mania-the pics are soooo SC. On the spine it says £2.00!!!:eek::eek:
And if anyone fancies being a bit more eco friendly (or you're impatient, like me!), there's an online version of the catalogue too

Hi Twinkles
Do you have photobucket or somewhere you could upload the pics to? FlickR? If you are able to upload them to another site (even facebook would work i think), then we can talk you through after thatA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Not a problem! My explanation is for photobucket
Ok, when you get the pic uploaded, do the following
Click the pic so it is open in front of you
Hover over it with the mouse, and you will see options like resize, edit etc
Click resize and choose medium
it will ask is it ok to resize - say ok
Once done, it will make you add a comment, i just stick an x in, and click "post"
To the left you will see "share this image". Go to the bottom one which says IMG CODE beside it - click on the text beside it , and it will say copied
Come in here, and look above where you type and you will see an encelope - when you hover over it with the mouse it says "insert image". Click the envelope
Paste in the link (which will have auto copied ) Control key and v will paste, or right click on your mouse and select paste.
Click ok....
Looks much more complicated than you think but if you follow that step by step you should be ok! PM me if you need help with itx

Just to let you know that I bought Union Jack tea towels from Primark 3 different for something like £1.99
I intend to make a cushion with mine.0 -
Hi sorry I didnt get back to anyone I have been up to my eyes since I posted last night.
Everything in my piccie was from tesco apart from the postcards.
Cake Tins (2 No) £6.00
3 piece cansiters £5.00
Mantel Clock £12.00
Frame £5.00
Napkins £1.50
UJ Teatowels (pack of 3) £4.00
I am also not quite sure what to do with those napkins, but I bought some spares to give away.
When my DH came in he asked about my current obsession with union jack stuff and said if you put all that out people will think we were supporting the BMP now:eek: ... I told him to shut upYou can stand there and agonize........
