Desktop. It's not doing it all the time, every 10 minutes or so for a minute, maybe less.

The sleeve bearing on one of your fans is going. If you get down and listen to the fans on your system when it's making the noise, you'll be able to identify which one it is.

It could be either powersupply/CPU/graphics card (fan optional)/chipset (fan optional)

Usually it's the powersupply fan (the one at the back).

Yes you can. Do you own a screwdriver? Then you can do technical...

    Procedure is:
    1. Find out which bit is making the noise.
    2. Replace bit.

    Very peaceful in Morrisons.

I wear wellies a lot but I spend a lot of time in fields. Boring greyish Dunlop ones.

Having an early lunch as food didn't happen yesterday.

Another good thing this year apart from the arrival of the little man- I have met some lovely people with funny names who are giving me so much suport and fun it's not true.

The same thing happened to my laptop, and now it has died completely - does anyone know if it is likely to be an expensive job to get it fixed?

Spud, it won't take much to get the fan replaced, no need to buy a new computer.

tenmah, laptops are a bit harder but if that's all that's wrong with it, you might be able to get it fixed. How old is it?

Laptops will probably be expensive as they're "all-in-one". Desktops are put together like electronic lego and the individual bricks are cheap and easy to replace.
