  • Hi, I was just wondering if there is anyone out there that has a laptop
that they no longer need. It does not matter which brand etc as long
as it is in working order and I can access the internet on it. This
would be greatly appreciated. I can collect from anywhere.
    Thanks in advance!

Instead of Freecycle use http://www.ForFreeForum.net instead - it was set up someone who uses the MSE board and has recently been launched.

Well done to the Mods on my local group, for posting this

    Hi
There's something else available for free as well......manners.
I'm surprised at the amount of emails I'm getting in regards to this.
I had one lady tell me that out of over 20 emails, she had one that
was polite. A quick tip to members responding to
offers...... ..impoliteness doesn't get you anywhere. Emails saying
"I'll take it, where are you?", "I can pick it up after work
tomorrow, let me know", "I want it, I can come for it right away",
"Sounds nice, call me" and then add a mobile phone number in there
just to boost your phone bill, just don't cut it with anyone and you
will find yourself ending up with nothing.
This is not to say that we all want pleading emails either
"please, please, please", those are also a no-no as are mentioning
personal details for safety reasons. When offering or responding,
please do not say that you are a single mother alone, you are disabled
etc. Not only do they come under the umbrella of sob stories (unless
you are applying for a disability item), they are also a breach of the
personal safety rules. We would like to think the best of people, but
we really don't know who is sat out there in cyberspace reading our
messages. So when responding, a simple short email such as "my
daughter would love it", "I've wanted one for ages", "mine is broken
and I've been looking for a replacement" is sufficient. No long
stories about why are necessary at all and will just end up with you
getting nothing from the group. Don't forget the please or thank you
    as well.
Our Freecycle motto is "be nice", so let's go for it. Thanks

Hate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
    Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying
  • I don't see a problem with people asking for white goods etc if they need them and can't afford them (although I hate people who are too specific - if you need a fridge/oven/freezer that much, you'll surely take anything as long as it's working???) but it's really expensive and really cheap stuff that people ask for... eg, just seen on my local freecycle page...

"I am hoping someone has some kitchen scales so that I can measure portions for my husband who is aiming to cut his carbohydrates A small set is all I need, electronic of dial type are both fine."

!!!!!!? The cheapest scales in Argos are £2.99!!!

Also saw a wanted for a phone charger - I bought a charger on ebay recently for pennies.

I used to think Freecycle was brilliant, now at least half of the posts are wanted posts. If they could have separate boards for wanted and offered, i think it'd be as good as it used to be.

Oh and don't get me started on rude emails in response to offered ads! If you're going to send a brisk emaill at least say please!!!

Appreciate what you're saying, particularly about fussy requests, but the point of Freecycle is to keep stuff out of landfill, not simply to get free stuff. (Not that you'd know it by some folk's extravagant "Wants!")
Those cheap scales or phone charger may be languishing unwanted in the back of someone's cupboard, only to end up in the bin / in landfill when they do have a clearout. A reasonable "Want" can prompt other users into giving such an item to someone who'll actually use it. That's the thinking behind allowing "Wants" at all.
Worse things will have happened in the world today...

Am loving Freecycle at the moment.
Got rid of quite a bit of stuff recently then when our TV was struggling this was the first place we looked. Got a much better set (Sony) than our old one, and a bigger screen. Fair enough it's not a flat screen, but no deeper than the old one it is replacing...

My local group is now letting people post 'those who say 'i'll have the lot' will be ignored' I say that, also no traders, no time wasters and so on.
It appears to have got a lot better now they have limited the number of wants people place, and limited the 'general' wants too :)

  • Im fuming as a result of an item i put on freecycle at the weekend. I bascially had 2 nokias my OH and i no longer needed, only because his parents upgraded and passed it onto us.

So i thought well they've given us mobiles for free i'll put our old ones on freecycle. As you can imagine i got flooded with emails, so simply wrote everyones name down and got my OH to choose 2 that way he didn't know the reason behind the person asking for it.

Put my taken post on the board and get an email this morning reading:

'thanks for putting the taken post up, you really know how to upset children don't you'

Why do people have to be this way, what makes her think she deserved them more than anyone else.
