It's my 39 week checkup and from the top of my head, I can't think of any reason why I would desperately need to go ~ can anyone else?!

I can think of several reasons why you should go to this appointment but don't really want to upset you. My understanding though is that the last few antenatal appointments are the really important ones, which is why when you get to about 36 weeks they start coming more frequently.

You wouldn't have any way of knowing without being seen by a midwife whether the baby was silently in distress, or whether your bp had suddenly shot up to the point where you and the baby are at risk. There is a poster elsewhere on MSE who had a perfectly healthy pregnancy which suddenly went wrong at around 38 weeks with no prior warning signs. The midwife will be able to tell from baby's FHR whether it is in distress and from dipping your wee whether you are still a safe environment for him or her.

Even if very uncomfortable, can you really not manage to get to your midwife, by taxi if necessary? How dreadful a journey is it? I've managed to fight my way across central London in rush hour with SPD all the way through two previous pregnancies to term, and this one so far, and personally I can't imagine circumstances in which I'd skip an appointment completely (rather than reschedule it for a different time) if I wasn't so ill that I'd necessitate a home visit by a doctor or a midwife.

    Hi all,

A quick question from me (I'm at work so can't hang round for long - will try and check back in at lunchtime).

Could you look over my hospital bag list and see if I've missed anything off please and whether the quantities of everything are OK? I've aimed it as if I'll be staying in for one night.

    LABOUR
    Maternity notes/birth plan
    Socks x1
    Nightdress/T-shirt
    Lip balm
    Drinks
    Cereal bars/snacks
    Cooling face spray
    Camera
Book/magazine (probably won't need) but maybe if I stay in overnight.
Birthing ball (I don't have one - should I get one?)
Tens machine (if I use one - haven't decided yet)
    Hair band
    Carrier bag for labour clothes

    POST LABOUR
    Dressing gown
    Slippers
    Socks x1
Front opening PJs/Nightie (is a nightie better than PJs, or is is just personal preference?)
    Towels x2
Breast pads (will 5 pairs be enough?)
Maternity pads (will 2 packs of 10 be enough?)
    Knickers x4
    Nursing bra
    Going home outfit
    Hairbrush
    Toothbrush
    Toothpaste
Make up (if I can be bothered!)
    Contact lenses
    Glasses
Toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, flannel, moisturising cream, deodorant.
    Mirror
    Tissues
    Arnica tablets
    Mobile phone

    FOR BABY
    Going home outfit
    Vests x2
    Socks x2
    Scratch mittens x1
    Sleepsuits x2
    Hat
    Muslin squares x2
    Blanket (is this needed?)
Dummy (or will I get evil looks if I take this?)
    Nappies (will 10 be enough?)
Nappy rash cream (will this be needed in the first day or two?)
    Nappy sacks
    Baby wipes
    Cotton wool balls
    Vaseline
Car seat (will leave in car until needed)

And a few more questions :D
    1) What are you all planning to dress your babies in when they are born? Will a sleepsuit and vest be OK?

    2) Are you packing a change of clothes/a few toiletries for your OHs?

    3) Are you packing two bags - one for labour and one for afterwards?

    4) What kind of bags do you pack things in?

    5) In water birth situations, do you take a bikini top?

Anyone else find the Mamas & Papas sight rather annoying for ordering maternity clothes?

I've got a gift card to use and I am finding it highly frustrating trying to order anything when you can't search by size so you have to look at each item individually to find it is out of stock.

Or am I just being a typical dizzy head pregnant lady who has missed the obvious? So far I have only managed to find 1 pair of pj bottoms (no top to match but they do have the matching nightie) and a tunic top.

Not much use to me unless I plan to stay home all day & night. I suppose I can just wear the top alone so it appears to anybody who sees me through the window from outside that I am fully dressed. Quite MSE actually come to think of it :rotfl:

    1) What are you all planning to dress your babies in when they are born? Will a sleepsuit and vest be OK? Yes, fine, the maternity part of the hospital is kept ridiculously warm especially for naked babys so they don't need a lot of clothes and blankets.

    2) Are you packing a change of clothes/a few toiletries for your OHs? Packed hubby a clean t-shirt into my bag.

    3) Are you packing two bags - one for labour and one for afterwards? I was going to, but seeing as I was taking a little wheeled suitcase and I'm hoping to be out asap I've just wedged them all in one...

    4) What kind of bags do you pack things in? See above lol... I'll be taking a wheeled suitcase for me, the free boots changing bag for baby and hubby's packing some magazines and snacks /cans of coke in his work bag ready to take...

    5) In water birth situations, do you take a bikini top? I didn't, I just got in the water in my nightie, or you can be naked... It's whatever you feel comfortable doing...

Sorry, couldn't be bothered to read your lists lol... Sure someone else will ;)

Spinks, when I ordered mine i found that every time i went to my shopping basket it had changed the size of the trousers i was trying to buy to a size 6, was REALLY annoying and eventually I ended up calling up and ordering over the phone! The stuff i ordered arrived this morning though and it is lovely.....although if you're looking at the jersey trousers i'd say go for a size smaller than you are! I was a pre preg 16 am now about a 14 ( lost some weight in the pregnancy, not intentionally i might add! ) and the jersey trousers are supposed to be a 12/14 and i'd say they were still a bit big on me....but they are SO comfy i dont mind...

Shell - I'd go with asking MWs to pop round to you, they can give you the dip stick to wee on so you don't need a pot to P in ;)
I know the number on a bra is the band but what I was trying to work out is what my "chest" measurement is to buy a top that came in inch sizes but it was for after bubs so I needed a way to work out my pre-preg size coz obviously if I measured it now it would be too big :D
I discovered that at a 32D my ribcage is between27-28" and across the boobies is 3" more so 30-31"

What do peep think of this cardi?? I really like it but its £30 and I'm a typical mum that will happily spend £30 on Chris but not on me :o

Thanks Hypno - any advice on ordering tops. I would normally be a size 12 without boobies but can be a 14 or 16 with them depending on the cut and style. Their sizing seems to be 12/14 or 16/18 and I am thinking I will need somewhere in the middle.

Just read that back and I managed to make it sound like I have interchangeable boobies or something, I don't. :rotfl:Basically I mean I often have to go up one or two sizes just because of the size of them which means they are often too big on the shoulders and under the arms. OOhhh I hate having these big mammaries

Same here Sami, I'll but hubby a sixty quid football shirt but wouldn't dream of spending more than a tenner on a single item for me lol...

Not keen on the cardi, think the wrapover bit would get on my wick and make me look really fat... But you're a skinny minnie so would probably look lovely!

Oh chopsticks, I'm going to stick a carrier bag in my labour bag so hubby can take anything used / not needed home with him and leave me with the suitcase to fill with bounty bags and things...
