Tesco misprices and discussion thread 11

Not massive but a DTD nonetheless :j
I bought 3 Mr Potato Head puzzles labelled on the shelf as £1 - scanned at £2.
£6 refund - not bad as they were on 3-4-2.0 -
Save this link to your PC as a permanent copy & pasted page (in case the thread is deleted later). Here you have Tesco staff discussing the fact that they are told to deny DTD if they can get away with it:
http://www.verylittlehelps.com/index.php?topic=9959.0
It also confirms, as we regular Tescoers (and ex- R&Rers) know already, that ANY overcharges ARE subject to DTD, even operator errors and double scans and promotional prices and reduced items and SELs put up too early or left out too late.
IMHO, everyone on here should print out a copy of that forum discussion (by the way it's a completely open forum on VLH and the home page specifically makes it clear the forum is for STAFF and CUSTOMERS and ANYONE with an interest in Tesco). I was once accused of using an online staff password in a store when I showed them a thread printout from VLH - soon put them right about free open forums. VLH is unofficial (not run by Tesco itself, but by disgruntled staff) and is mostly staff chat - but it often brings up little nuggets like this!
Here's the last word on that thread at the moment, from a staff member:
'It is Company policy to give DTD, whether the overcharge is a simple one via being charged the wrong price - or having the item double-scanned. This is fact, and has been advertised as such. Therefore if this policy is deliberately not observed, then that is gross misconduct by the member of staff concerned, and also fraud. If a customer is deliberately misinformed, or not given the correct refund and later finds that out, then he may visit the Trading Standards Office to make a complaint. I would imagine that the store manager would not wish a visit from a Trading Standards Officer to discuss this matter, knowing that it may result in a fine, and a headline in the local press to follow.'
Nuff said really but if you fancy prolonging the thread it's free to register and post on VLH. I know that fellow MSE members and R&Rer 'the lurch' used to post as a customer on there, completely openly.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

thanks coupon-mad
wish I'd had this on a number of occasions recently!!0 -
Coupon-mad, can't say I am shocked (our local Tesco CS are really bad and often deny all knowledge of DTD despite working there for years). But it really makes me angry.
I wonder if it would help to copy and paste the whole thread in here.
This particular post from Argonaut makes my blood boil:
"are people aware there are websites actively telling people how to scam Tesco.....right down to the lines/products to look for..?? !!!"
Er, are you aware that Tesco constantly look for ways to scam its customers via incorrect and OOD SELs etc??? DTD would never have to be given if these 'errors' didn't occur. I am going to ring Trading Standards next time AND possibly the local rag.Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

Hello all, was wondering if you guys could help me.
I was in Tesco yesterday and purchased a 6 pack of napolina chopped tomatoes (4 pack, but 50% extra free). It was below a sign saying Napolina chopped tomatoes 4 x 400g £2 so I asked a nearby assistant if they were included in the offer, she checked with another assistant and they confirmed that they were £2 even though they were 50% extra free.
Got home and realised I was charged £3.89 for them. Went back to the store today and got fobbed off by CS saying that:
a) the label clearly states 4 pack
b) the barcodes don't match.
I argued back saying an assistant had told me they were included in the offer and she said I didn't know the assistant's name so she couldn't inform her that they weren't included. She said that they had probably sold out of the 4 packs and someone had taken down the label for the 50% extra free packs. I asked her if she could take down the offer sign as it was very misleading and she said she couldn't as it wasn't her department. I also asked if she could give me DTD back as a goodwill gesture as it is pretty misleading. She said no and that for ALL offers, customers must check the barcode every time!
Do I have a case? I wouldn't even have bought them if they weren't on offer and I had to travel a fair bit to get back to the store.0 -
Of course you have a case for DTD, they can't charge more for an 'extra free' version.
I had this exact same thing in a Tesco Metro a while ago. Pringles were BOGOF but there were a few promo packs among the same items, same shelf, that also had an extra 25%. Of course I bought those ones and the BOGOF didn't work.
Stupid jobsworth woman on CS argued until she was blue in the face 'different barcode, the offer is only on the normal size ones' etc. I calmly disagreed, pointed out the obvious fact that they cannot charge more for a product with 'extra free' (errrr...or it's not free!). It would be against the Sale of Goods Act of course, it's obvious to anyone with a brain, I thought.
She wasn't having it so I stood my ground and asked for the Duty Manager. She got in first and ranted her side of it. Then I asked him how he could justify that 2 packs with '25% extra free' were being charged at a higher price than the standard pack they were based on. I said of course they have a different barcode (they would do as they are promo stock) but wondered how they would justify this to TS if I decided to raise the issue? I said 'you are charging more for the free part, which is against the law'.
He said, 'you're right, they should be based on the same price and offer as the standard pack of course'. He looked daggers at the shrieking staff member and instructed her to 'give the lady her DTD'.
The barcode is often cited but it's usually bollox, particularly so in this sort of 'different packaging/extra free' case. Even a pack with the same amount of product but with different 'special Easter' packaging or a competition on it sometimes has a different barcode - but again that doesn't mean it should be excluded from any offer on the basic standard product.
DTD applies, s.aureus.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Thanks Coupon-mad!
I will head back to Tesco later to argue my case. Erm, do you have to go back to the original store for a DTD? The store I bought the items from is a bit out of my way and I have a store closer to me.0 -

Went back to the store and a different CS told me the same rubbish about barcodes not matching and how it was a 6 pack. She even tried to say that the offer label was directly above some 4 packs of plum (not chopped) tomatoes and therefore only applied to them (despite the label clearly saying chopped). Oh, and I also pointed out that the special offer label for the plum tomatoes was missing so obviously someone else had complained.
Anyway, after lots of debating (you're charging extra despite it saying 'free'), another member of staff and then a word with the duty manager, I got my DTD. Of course it wouldn't be Tesco without the CS trying to just give me the difference in cost rather than DTD!
What I'm really annoyed about is that both of the signs have been taken down, so they're going to charge other customers £3.89 when they should be getting it for £2...well, technically 6 tins for 11p
Thank you so much Coupon-mad for helping me. Without your post, I would have just let it go and been out of pocket.0 -

Well done they were definitely in the wrong, it is up to them to worry about whether their barcodes on the SELs match the product not the customers. Pricing should be clear and unambiguous.0
