Yeah, I agree!

You can't claim for a pre-existing fault on a car- and regardless of how much an MD makes, doesn't make it right/legal to try to claim for something that existed when the car was bought.

My insurance company would laugh at me for trying it though!

Why would you want to claim this on the insurance? The job should only cost maybe £200 - £300 and most insurance excesses are about this amount anyway. So apart from this not being an insurance job in the first place - even if they did cover it it wouldn't be worth claiming.
