I fear it was all a big con, and by getting it put in the MSE weekly email it just allowed Tesco millions of advertising hits on their Tesco Direct site, for free!

    Awful behavior on their part.

I too assumed it was a "loss leader" to get traffic, and I assumed that they'd put a cap on how many losses they were prepared to make - e.g. allow 5000 books at that price and then say out of stock - so they'd still let 5000 people buy it at the low price.

I am SO disappointed as I thought it was a great bargain.

I'll never shop on Tesco Direct again.

(But my only close by supermarket is Tesco so I'll still be using them for my groceries...)

Let's hope their product ordering system has taken into account all the orders they got when we thought it was £2.50. They'll be left with shelfloads. Serve them right!

I agree with davidabond the same thing happened to me, same emails etc. I thought once they advertise an item at a certain price, especially once you have paid, checked out and received a confirmation email, then they have to honour that.

    Shoddy work by Tesco!!

Tesco cancelled my book order also, which would not be too bad except that they LIED

I ordered the book then received an email the same day telling me that it would take 4 weeks for delivery as there was no stock available. (LIE)

8 Days later they cancel my order, but then add if I want to pay more I can have it straight away suddenly the stock has appeared as if by magic !

Mistakes I accept but NOT the blatant LIES.

I certainly think we should ask that this issue is highlighted in the weekly e-mail from Martin. Like others, I thought this was a fantastic deal and went onto the Tesco Direct website specifically to order it. Whilst I was there, I ordered another Lonely Planet book that I'd wanted to buy, but which I would almost certainly have bought directly from Lonely Planet had I not been using the Tesco website for the deal on the Spain book.

I've long since received the other Lonely Planet book, and am feeling furious that I have ended up putting money into Tesco's pockets under false pretences. The extra advertising and business they will have got from this deal will be very significant, and this leaves an extremely bad taste in the mouth.

    In agreement with you all!
  • hi there this is my first post and the lonely plante book was my first purchase off the back of MSM ~ I am really disappointed that Tesco has withdrawn this order does this happen often?

  • If every person who ordered a copy of this book from Tesco emails them to complain and say that they will not in future consider using Tesco Direct they may change their tune - if enough people make enough noise.

    Why not email them now!

Ive just received the cancelled order, after telling me it was postphoned. I cant believe they wrote in the T&C that they could cancel if they put the wrong price. That makes me feel they did it deliberately. In the good old days a company would honour such a mistake. Anyway Ive replied as follows,
    Dear Tesco,

I find it incredible that you can accept money for an order and then cancel it after I have paid, apparently its in the terms and conditions so that would imply that you intended to do this which is appalling for your valued customers.

How insulting to offer the book at a higher price. Ill be taking my custom elsewhere,

You must have been one of the lucky ones. My order acknowledgement is dated 29 April and I got the out of stock and then the cancellation messages.

Not too worried as I usually get good guide books from the library for my destinations. I suppose Tesco have saved me £2.50!
