  • Hi there, sorry I am so late on this thread, only just seen it.
I have been making cake toppers for some years now, theres always so much to learn with fimo, so if it is any help I can give my opinion on my experience
You can bake a partial model and rebake as you add bits, this is usually a good idea rather than letting them stand and it also means you don't lose the shape of what you have already made
Bake on 120 degrees but if I do rebakes I leave it in each time for about 10 minutes.
They will only burn if left in too long on each occasion, too close to the top or too high a temperature
Too keep yourself dust free, you can do a number of things,
    1. wash your hands thoroughly then wipe them in a clean blue and white J cloth. or
    2. rub vaseline into your hands then knead a piece of scrap fimo
    3. failing that, knead the scrap fimo thoroughly on it's own
I like to attach pieces by using wire (not coated) and liquid fimo, this comes in bottle form.
I make a hole with the wire, squidge liquid fim oin the hole then re insert wire and bake.
Liquid fimo sets as hard, if not harder, as super glue.
you can also use liquid fimo to soften hard fimo, there is also 'ready mix' available for this purpose too.
If your classic fimo is hard to use it is either old stock or stored incorrectly.
I have bought my fimo from many places but the only one I can get guaranteed new, well stored stock is Bead Merrily online.
I very often mix sculpey and fimo to get a desired colour, and it bakes just as well.
I tend to find fimo soft too soft for most jobs as it stretches easy and can lose it's shape in the modelling process.
for detailed work, I would recommend classic
Don't store unbaked fimo in anything metalic
When using colours like red, green or black, you will need to wash your hands thoroughly before using a lighter colour
Someone asked about tartan, this can be achieved by making a quarter of the tartan as a cane, slice thinly then piece together gently
If you can't get get the colour you want in the soft, buy classic and mix with liquid fimo or ready mix.
    Hope that helps.
  • I have begun to make my fimo cake figures :)
i have made my daughters one, its soo good she wants to keep it.
i have made the bar that the groom will be propped against.
so i thought i'd now make the groom, i just cant do it. i have made it 3 times now and im just not happy with it.
I guess what i would really like is an insight into how you went about making the groom please please. did you make the jacket in pieces?
    any help appreciated.

^^I made the body, then practically cut out clothes to fit. I done the chest, back, arms and collar of the jacket all seperately then stuck them all together.
