Preferences IE8 or Firefox?

I've been getting occasional 'window freeze' when selecting new sites with IE7. The new window either doesn't arrive at all or only partially and I'm left looking at an incomplete window which can't be minimised or deleted until Vista, in its wisdom, eventually decides to present me with an 'IE not responding' option box. Sometimes I even have to reboot because this box won't appear.

Browser alternatives seem to lie between IE8 and Firefox.

Any opinions from people who have tried both?

I only use IE when at my relatives as they have never installed FF.

I much prefer FF and although it still lags behind in Britain I believe it is now overtaken IE7 in the rest of Europe (just checked and it has)

    Another chrome user here.

IE8 was a pile of poo, uninstalled it within a week.

Use chrome 99% of the time now, only using IE for pesky corporate web-based software...

They're all free, try them all and see which one you prefer. You'll be the one using it. IE7/8 on Vista with UAC enabled is the most secure browser at the moment, but Firefox offers you the ability to customise things with plug ins, Chrome is speedy and unclutted, but perhaps lacks functionality and Opera is a bit more complicated.

Can I assume that these browsers are not mutually antagonistic in any way and can live safely together on Vista?

Just turn off the option to check whether each one is the default browser, and perhaps the file associations for .html etc back to whichever you want to be the default.

    Side by side they're fine.

Oh, no, not at all. The only thing that you need to consider is that chrome is super fast and clean and firefox has lots of nice plug ins, search bars, and features that chrome dosent have yet and might not for quite a while.

I usually use Fire fox, as have found a couple of add ons that make it do useful extra things. Along side Chrome and Opera I have just tried Safari 4. It is nice to use and in and an Appley sort of way very pretty!
