Lovely shiny new thread, have done my first shop of the month and bought most of the cleaning stuff.

I have had a couple of problems with one of my freezers so will be running down the stocks in case we have a disaster there.

Good luck everyone with the May challenge, together we will all succeed.
  • Phew April was tough. Have done the first shop of May already £100.40.
Please put me down for £220 for May

  • Hi
    declaring at £98.33 for April.
May budget is £100. It has been the same for a year now but only seem to be able to reduce the monthly spend during the summer when we grow a lot of our own food.

Good luck to all and many thanks to all the people who keep the challenge going.

Pip-squeak, not that I do grow any food (I certainly aspire to!) so not an expert, but it popped into my head when I read your post - can you preserve any of the food you grow in the summer? Or grow foods that do preserve?

Thats what Im trying to do this year... Im having a go at winter squash that store quite well, sweet potatoes ditto,
I have also set things like scarlet Kale, brussels, mini cabbage etc that will stand over winter -I grow everything in tubs and pots so Im restricted to a degree -but every little helps.
oooohh Im also growing lots of tomatoes (40odd plants):rotfl:plenty for roasting and making into pasta sauces.
Having a go at mini cauli to drop in the freezer,
I also plan on turning any excess into soups for winter as then hubby takes soups and HM bread every day ;)

Its amazing how much you can squeeze into the smallest space....
    ok -enough rambling :o

I've had both frozen cauli and brocolli - though we find them a bit soft (prefer it steamed to boiled). But if I buy fresh I always end up freezing some - and that's soft when used too, so very little difference between buying frozen or freezing myself.

I actually tend to buy the bags of mixed veg (some farmhouse types include cauli and brocolli, but I also get the peas/corn/beans/carrots mixes as well), as it's the only way of regularly getting a mix of vegetables into DS (who's almost 18!)

  • Hey focus888,

I have the same problem with fresh veg because of the shifts i work, i start with good intentions then end up wasting more than i should or giving it to bunny!! I buy frozen peas, mixed veg, corn on cob, green beans. They always taste ok to me, and i always have them in to go with my meals. Not sure about brocolli though.

Can I set £120 for May please? :)

First shop for May is tomorrow. Not sure how well in budget I will come in this week, but I can't do worse than last month right ;) I hope! :D

    Good luck everyone x
