    Lovely shiny new thread, have done my first shop of the month and bought most of the cleaning stuff.

    I have had a couple of problems with one of my freezers so will be running down the stocks in case we have a disaster there.

    Good luck everyone with the May challenge, together we will all succeed.

    declaring at £98.33 for April.
    May budget is £100. It has been the same for a year now but only seem to be able to reduce the monthly spend during the summer when we grow a lot of our own food.

    Good luck to all and many thanks to all the people who keep the challenge going.

    Pip-squeak, not that I do grow any food (I certainly aspire to!) so not an expert, but it popped into my head when I read your post - can you preserve any of the food you grow in the summer? Or grow foods that do preserve?

    Thats what Im trying to do this year... Im having a go at winter squash that store quite well, sweet potatoes ditto,
    I have also set things like scarlet Kale, brussels, mini cabbage etc that will stand over winter -I grow everything in tubs and pots so Im restricted to a degree -but every little helps.
    oooohh Im also growing lots of tomatoes (40odd plants):rotfl:plenty for roasting and making into pasta sauces.
    Having a go at mini cauli to drop in the freezer,
    I also plan on turning any excess into soups for winter as then hubby takes soups and HM bread every day ;)

    Its amazing how much you can squeeze into the smallest space....

    Today will be a spend day but not sure how much yet. Can anyone tell me what vegetables are good frozen? i normally go for the fresh stuff but it keeps going off before i have a chance to use it :( i buy frozen cauliflower just wondered is frozen broccoli any good? thanks this will help try and reduce my spends down i think :)

    I've had both frozen cauli and brocolli - though we find them a bit soft (prefer it steamed to boiled). But if I buy fresh I always end up freezing some - and that's soft when used too, so very little difference between buying frozen or freezing myself.

    I actually tend to buy the bags of mixed veg (some farmhouse types include cauli and brocolli, but I also get the peas/corn/beans/carrots mixes as well), as it's the only way of regularly getting a mix of vegetables into DS (who's almost 18!)

    I have the same problem with fresh veg because of the shifts i work, i start with good intentions then end up wasting more than i should or giving it to bunny!! I buy frozen peas, mixed veg, corn on cob, green beans. They always taste ok to me, and i always have them in to go with my meals. Not sure about brocolli though.

    First shop for May is tomorrow. Not sure how well in budget I will come in this week, but I can't do worse than last month right ;) I hope! :D
